Published: April 1, 2011

CSULB men’s basketball coach Dan Monson has been named one of 24 All-District coaches by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Monson was named the recipient of the District 9 honor by the NABC.

Monson, in his fourth season at CSULB, led the 49ers to the Big West Conference regular-season championship and a spot in the National Invitation Tournament. The 49ers finished the season with a 22-12 record, including a 14-2 mark in league play, winning the Big West Conference regular-season championship by four games over runner-up Cal Poly. CSULB ran off an 11-game winning streak that was snapped by UC Santa Barbara in the championship game of the Big West Conference Tournament.

With stops at Gonzaga University and the University of Minnesota prior to coming to Long Beach, Monson has a careeer record of 230-191 as a head coach.

Monson was also named the Big West Conference Coach of the Year in a vote of the league’s coaches, and all five of the 49ers starters claimed all-league recognition.

Junior guard Casper Ware became the first player in league history to win both the conference’s player of the year award, as well as the defensive player of the year honor and was more recently named named to the Associated Press honorable mention All-America Team. He is just the second 49er to earn a spot on the team in the last 31 years and only the 16th CSULB player ever to earn All-American recognition. Ware claimed first-team All-Big West Conference recognition, while also being named to the NABC and U.S. Basketball Writers of America (USBWA) all-district teams.
