In Response to Frog’s Closure
IIn response to the closure of Frog’s Fitness and its Beach Wellness Program, the College of Health and Human Services at CSULB recently opened the Center for Active Aging (CAA) to fill the wellness program’s void and provide services for the senior community in the Long Beach area.
The Beach Wellness Program, now called the Kinesiotherapy Clinic, is housed within the CAA. Faculty, staff, and students from the Department of Kinesiology are responsible for the daily operation of the center.
The new center opened Feb. 1 in the space vacated by Frog’s Fitness in the Walter Pyramid. Available to seniors (50 years and older), the center provides special fitness classes for seniors and kinesiotherapy services for persons with disabilities. Membership in the center includes membership in the university’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI).
Kenneth Millar, dean of CSULB’s College of Health and Human Services, said the university decided to re-establish the fitness and kinesiotherapy efforts of the Beach Wellness Program after realizing the need within the greater Long Beach community. He also noted that continuing these services is important to the Kinesiology Department because student internships and many of the department’s physical activity courses had been offered in the former Frog’s space.
“The fitness center for members of OLLI and kinesiotherapy services for physically challenged members of our community are an important expression of the mission of the College of Health and Human Services at Cal State Long Beach,” Millar said.
Sharon Guthrie, chair of the Kinesiology Department, added: “The center also provides kinesiology students with valuable educational experience and an opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom in a real world setting. Our department mission is to study, teach, and promote physical activity to enhance the quality of life. The opening of the Center for Active Aging helps us to accomplish this important goal.”
