Members of the CSULB campus community are invited to attend a special grand opening of the new Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC) on Monday, Sept. 20, from 3-5 p.m.
Joining the festivities for the opening will be celebrity guest fitness expert and CSULB alumna Denise Austin, who earned her bachelor’s of science degree in physical education at the university in 1979.
Dave Edwards, ASI associate executive director and director of the University Student Union, will serve as the emcee for the event, which will include a reception from 3-4 p.m. with refreshments and music. The official ceremony will run from 4-4:30 p.m. followed by a ribbon-cutting. Closing out the festivities will be a scavenger hunt and other SRWC activities.
Austin, a pioneer in the exercise and sports industry, has sold more than 20 million exercise videos and DVDs, authored 10 books on fitness and starred in the longest-running fitness program on television, “The Jack LaLanne Show.”
She is currently serving her second term on the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, for which she was originally appointed in 2002. She also testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions and helped launch the new food guidance system of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Her contributions to heart health were recognized by Woman’s Day magazine and the American Heart Association when she was presented with the 2008 Red Dress Award.
Also speaking at the event will be CSULB President F. King Alexander and current ASI President James Ahumada.
The $61 million, 126,000-square-foot facility features weight and fitness machines, cardio theater, a wellness center, rock-climbing wall, indoor running track, basketball/volleyball/badminton courts, multi-activity courts, outside recreation pool and spa, sand volleyball and racquetball courts, health-food shop, personal trainers and group fitness classes.
