Emergency Preparedness Information

Power Failures

Should there be a major power outage on University it can be expected to last from between one and four hours. The University may not receive advance notice of when a blackout is to occur. If the power company expects the outage to last longer than one and a half hours the company has agreed to notify the University.

When reacting to a power outage it is important to remember that if the University loses power, the surrounding area will in all likelihood also be affected. Traffic signals and streetlights will not be operating. When driving during an outage remember that ALL intersections normally controlled by a traffic signal IMMEDIATELY become FOUR-WAY STOPS. Always stop at the darkened intersection, when proceed with caution.

Telephones should continue to operate as normal and voice mail features should continue to operate, however telephone lighting will be out.

When leaving the upper floors of a building remember the elevators will not be operating. Any person trapped inside an elevator should use the emergency phone to call the University Police for assistance.

General Information

  1. The Physical Planning/Facilities Management (PP/FM) web site (http://ppfm.csulb.edu/) is accessible through the CSULB home page. It includes updates from the ISO on the power situation.

  2. In the event of a power outage a situation update and additional instructions will be available from Public Affairs via voicemail. Information may also be available on the News and Events web site, which is accessible through the CSULB home page.

  3. Campus shuttles will continue to operate on their regular schedules.

  4. Do not call 9-1-1 to report the outage. The University Police will be aware of an outage the moment it occurs. Excessive calls to the 9-1-1 system tie the lines up and prevent those with life threatening emergencies from reaching assistance.

  5. Disabled persons needing assistance should contact the University Police. (9-1-1 or 985-4101).
