Hazardous
Materials Release
PERSONNEL EXPOSURES/CONTAMINATION
-
Remove exposed/contaminated individual(s)
from area, unless it is unsafe
to do so because of (1) medical condition
of
victim(s), or (2) potential hazard
to rescuer(s).

AT ALL TIMES notify University Police
Emergency 9-1-1 if immediate
medical attention is required.
-
If incident occurs
during normal working hours,
notify Safety and Risk
Management,
5-2283. If after hours, notify
University Police Emergency 9-1-1.

Administer First Aid as appropriate.
-
Proceed to nearest emergency eyewash/shower
to flush contamination from eyes/skin.
-
Remove any contaminated clothing.
- Stand
by to provide information or
assistance (including Material
Safety Data Sheet)
to emergency response personnel
(in cases where they are
dispatched).

not trained in emergency
response or to work with
hazardous materials leave
the area immediately and
contact University Police,
9-1-1. |

Do not attempt to clean up or begin
decontamination procedures alone
or without wearing proper protective
attire, including
appropriate respiratory protection
where airborne hazards may exist. (Personnel
must be trained and certified before
using respiratory protection). Unless
the incident is a small spill of
a relatively
innocuous material, DO NOT ATTEMPT
SPILL CLEAN UP WITHOUT SAFETY AND RISK
MANAGEMENT
APPROVAL.

Avoid spreading contamination
by restricting access to the equipment/area
only to
individuals who are properly protected
and trained to deal with the type
of hazard which exists (e.g., radioactive,
corrosive, flammable, biological).

Report details and/or
request assistance from SRM (5-2283)
if the incident
occurs during normal work hours.
If the incident
occurs after hours, contact University
Police Emergency 9-1-1.

If a liquid
spill, attempt to contain it by
using appropriate absorbent
material.

Attempt to decontaminate
the equipment/area using appropriate
methods under SRM
direction. If material is
radioactive, assess radiation
levels with appropriate monitoring
devices before and after
decontamination.
- Stand by to provide information/assistance
to emergency response personnel
(in cases where they are
dispatched).

SOIL)

Stop the release, if safe to do so.

Follow procedures described above
for contamination of equipment/facility.
