Emergency Preparedness Information

Earthquakes

  1. If indoors, stay there. Seek immediate shelter. Duck, cover and hold. Try to get under something solid, like a desk or table that will protect you from falling debris.

  2. If outdoors, get into an open area away from trees, buildings, walls, and power lines.

  3. If driving, pull over to the side of the road and stop. Avoid overpasses, underpasses, and power lines. Stay in your car until the shaking stops. Turn on your emergency flashers, turn your ignition off, and set the parking brake.

  4. If in a high-rise building, stay away from windows and outside walls. If you must evacuate the building do NOT use elevators.

  5. If in a crowded public place, do not rush the doors. Move away from display shelves that contain objects which could fall.

  6. After the shock subsides, get out of doors, well clear of building, trees, and power lines.

  7. Follow the procedures in this brochure for fire, hazardous materials release, and serious injury if necessary.

  8. In the event of major damage or disruption, the University Police and/or Building Marshals will announce and implement evacuation procedures. Follow the directions of emergency response personnel.

  9. Identify and assist the injured.

  10. Notify the University Police of any serious hazards or injured persons (9-1-1).

  11. DO NOT RETURN TO AN EVACUATED BUILDING UNTIL INSTRUCTED THAT IT IS SAFE TO DO SO.
