2000

Rhonda Hayes (2000, B.S., engineering– computer engineering) is a support manager in Raytheon Space and Airborne System’s Information Technology Division. She also volunteers with CSULB’s MESA Schools program to help middle and high school students learn more about the engineering field.

The Bank of Hawaii promoted Christopher C. Young (2000, MBA) to vice president of private client services on Kaua‘i. Prior to joining the bank in 2004, Young served as a financial advisor for Merrill Lynch in Orange County, Calif.

Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority in Tampa, Fla., hired David Armijo (2001, MPA), CSULB’s 2004 Distinguished Alumnus of the College of Health and Human Services. He had been with the Orange County Transportation Corridors Agency and was a general manager for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

The United Arab Emirates Roads and Transportation Authority (RTA) appointed Majid Abdul Aziz Al-Shamsi (2001, B.S., engineering–construction engineering management) as manager of quality, health, safety and environment for RTA’s Public Transport Agency.

The city of Calexico, Calif., selected Peter F. Mercado (2001, B.S., occupational studies; 2006, MPA) as permanent fire chief after having served as interim chief. He is a Calexico native and has been with the department for 14 years.

Temple City Unified School District named Christopher J. Sewell (2001, MPA; 2003, credential) as a dean of Temple City High School in December. He was an administrator with Whittier Union High School District.

Zachary Toering (2001, B.S., business administration–finance) is the new vice president of national accounts for Triple Net Properties LLC. He had been with the firm’s NNN Capital Corp. affiliate prior to taking a leave to earn his MBA from Columbia Business School.

Robert J. Garcia (2002, B.A., interpersonal communication) is director of media and public relations at Long Beach City College. He is a former CSULB Associated Students Inc. president and has held several public affairs positions including chief of staff for former Long Beach Councilman Frank Colonna (1965, B.S., zoology).

Ryan A. Geneman (2002, B.S., business administration–finance and international business; B.A., German) is an assistant vice president and portfolio manager for KeyBank’s Healthcare Finance Group in Washington state. His wife, U.S. Army Capt. Bonnie J. (Larsen) Geneman (2003, B.S., biology and physiology), is a pediatric intern at Madigan Army Medical Center in Fort Lewis, Wash. They have two children, Audrie and Karson, and celebrated their fifth anniversary this May.

Kaan Z. Kilik (2002, B.S., business administration–finance) is a project/program manager for SprintNextel’s Boost Mobile’s airtime technology distribution. “I am currently working on a master’s in project management from George Washington University and plan to attend an MBA program,” he wrote.

Pelican Products of Torrance, Calif., promoted Kevin Deighton (2003, MBA) to vice president of research and product development. He was director of product development for the firm, which manufactures advanced lighting devices and storage cases. He had been a mechanical engineer for Vickers Defense Systems in England.

Stacy Suggs (2003, MBA) received a Society of Women Engineers’ (SWE) Distinguished New Engineer Award in November. She is a lead power conversion test engineer with Northrop Grumman. She has been president of SWE’s Los Angeles section and is active in the National Society of Black Engineers.

Melody La Montia (2004, MFA–art) is a photography faculty member at Fullerton College in Fullerton, Calif., whose work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. She also continues to operate her commercial photography studio in Los Angeles.

Robert T. “Bob” Mote (2004, B.S., occupational studies) retired from Buena Park Police Department in July after 30 years, most recently as a lieutenant commanding the detective bureau. He was a SWAT team crisis negotiator for more than 23 years. He now supervises security officers at Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, Calif.

Brooke Nance (2004, B.A., film and electronic arts) has launched a new business, the Agnes Avery Collection, www.agnesavery collection.com, that provides bridal shower favors, bridesmaid and groomsman gifts and baby shower favors.

2005

RBI Retail Brokers selected Angie Aragon (2005, B.S., business administration– management) as a retail specialist in its Riverside, Calif., office, where she is involved in commercial property management. She previously was with Grubb & Ellis.

Senior Airman Ryan C. Crocker (2005, B.S., criminal justice) is currently serving in Iraq with the U.S. Air Force and is working on counter-improvised explosive device operations. He deployed from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.

An ornament created by artist Matthew Rangel (2005, BFA, art), depicting Kings Canyon National Park, hung on a Christmas tree in the White House Blue Room in Washington, D.C., this past holiday season. The Sequoia Parks Foundation contacted Rangel as a result of an invitation from the National Park Service to create decorations depicting every site in the NPS system.

Tiffany Rinehart (2006, B.A., journalism) writes: “After college, I immediately got a job as personal assistant to comedian Kathy Griffin. Last year I was a regular on her Emmy Award-winning reality show, ‘Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List,’ which airs on Bravo. We are currently filming the fourth season of the show which will air starting in June.”

Jacqueline Seabrooks (2006, MPA) became the first African American woman police chief in California in October when the city of Inglewood, Calif., selected her to lead its police department. She previously served with the Santa Monica Police Department for more than 24 years, including as commanding officer for the offices of Criminal Investigations, Operations, and Special Enforcement.

Kristin Egusa (2007, B.A., speech communication) is a team captain of the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team Spirit Dance Team, where she has been a dancer for four years.

Former President’s Scholar Danae Werthmann (2007, B.A., environmental science and policy, and political science) received a 2007-08 Donald Bren Foundation Fellowship for her master’s studies at the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at UC Santa Barbara.

Taking Note

Alumnus Ricky Lizalde, who studied dance and costume design at CSULB in the early 1990s, was a competitor in the latest season of Bravo cable television’s “Project Runway.” He designed lingerie for Oscar de la Renta and Vera Wang and now has his own lingerie line called Lizalde in department stores and boutiques.

The name of Alex Bellehumeur (1956, B.A., fine arts) was misspelled in the Fall 2007 Beach Review. We regret the error.

Marriages

Erika Aeschliman (2005, B.A., sociology) and Stephan Chaney were married on Sept. 29 in Sierra Madre, Calif. She is an Academic Advising Center advisor at CSULB.

Noel E. Forrest (1994, B.A., psychology) and Christopher E. Fellow married on Nov. 3 at Our Lady of Refuge Church in Long Beach.

Jennifer Harris (2002, B.A., communication studies) and Larry Phillips III (2001, B.S., business administration–accountancy; 2003, MBA) were married on Oct. 7 in Laguna Beach, Calif.

Joshua B. Kennedy (2004, B.A., broadcast journalism) and Dawn E. Melton married Oct. 21 in Newhall, Calif.

Nora Kousoum (2002, B.S., business administration–finance) and Robert J. Verceles (1994, B.S., engineering–civil engineering) were married Dec. 16, 2006, in Marina del Rey, Calif.

Kristin-Paige Madonia (2005, MFA) and Christopher M. Gordon were married on Oct. 6 in Charlottesville, Va. They reside in San Francisco, where she is a writer and teacher.

Melina Mahacek (1999, B.A., liberal studies) and Daniel Nafarrate (2000, B.A., history) married July 7 in Manhattan Beach, Calif.

Stephania Pugliese (2004, B.A., speech communication) and Argyris L. Panayotopoulos were married on July 7 in San Jose, Calif. After interning at ABC 7 news, she now is with NBC 11 KNTV in San Jose as an online community specialist with its Web site.

Births

Elio Acosta (2006, B.A, psychology) and his wife, Lucy, had a son, Evan Acosta, born Nov. 14.

Christine (Felix) Mainberger (2007, B.A., political science) and her husband, Jon Mainberger, became parents of Kasen Felix Mainberger on Dec. 2 at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, Calif.

In Memoriam

Carolyn Beck (1968, B.A., music) died Jan. 12 in Tyler, Texas, at age 62. Prior to retiring in August, she was an academic counselor at the Kaufman, Texas, campus of Trinity Valley Community College.

Harold K. Becker, professor emeritus, criminology, died on Nov. 21 in Orange County. He was 74. He joined CSULB in 1963, became emeritus in 2000 and continued teaching part time until 2005.

Warren J. “Barney” Boring, professor emeritus, physical education, died Jan. 11 in Rossmoor, Calif., at age 87. He joined the campus in 1956 as a P.E. faculty member and established the wrestling program. He retired in 1981 and was inducted into the 49er Athletics Hall of Fame in 1994.

Donna Boutelle, professor emerita, history, died Jan. 17 in Santa Rosa, Calif., at age 76. She joined the CSULB faculty in 1967 as a medieval specialist and taught for almost 40 years.

James B. Boyer (1973, B.S., industrial technology) died Dec. 21. He was a resident of Windsor, Calif., and president of the Windsor Lions Club.

David W. Bradley, a statistician and Web programmer with CSULB’s Library and Academic Technology Services, died Nov. 22 at age 58. He joined CSULB in 1973 and earned a Ph.D. from USC in 1989.

Betty Jean (Strong) Cottrell (1966, B.A., social work) died Oct. 30 at age 87 in Portland, Ore. She was a California Child Protective Services social worker in Los Angeles before moving to Oregon in 1989.

Linda L. Evans (1971, M.A., educational administration) died Oct. 11 in Huntington Beach, Calif., at age 61. She taught Spanish at Mayfair High School in Lakewood.

Edgar Loftesnes (1963, B.S., civil engineering) died Aug. 23 in Long Beach at age 69. He retired as a city of Long Beach division engineer in 1996.

Robert L. Lyons (1961, M.A., educational administration) died Nov. 23 in Orange County. He retired in 1988 from Corona del Mar High School.

Ellamae Knox Peery (1962, M.A., home economics) died Nov. 6 at age 90. She previously owned the Hub Café and the Coffee Cup in Brea and later was a high school home economics teacher.

Charles A. Roberts Jr., professor emeritus, physics and astronomy, died Dec. 6. He joined Cal State Long Beach in 1956, serving as department chair from 1960-69, and retired in 1986.

Robert E. Strain, professor emeritus, economics, died Dec. 14 at age 92. He came to the campus in 1956, became emeritus in 1978 and taught part time until 1983.

Douglas Tally (1958, B.A., business administration) died March 17 at age 88. He retired from CSULB in 1980. He and his wife, Marge, have been long-time university supporters.
