Japanese Garden Celebrates 25 Years
The Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2006. And like the flowers and plants that help create an ambience of peace and serenity, the garden’s reputation as a vital resource in the community is thriving.
More than 60,000 guests, including school groups, visit each year. Along with an annual spring festival, koi round up, chrysanthemum show, origami festival and horticulture symposium, the garden offers special member-only programs. The garden also is a popular spot for weddings and special events, including many ceremonies with multicultural themes and ethnic traditions.
Recent projects include a new Friend’s Garden, a tented space for special events; replacement of the original moon bridge; as well as restoration of plant collections. A courtyard redesign is underway.
“It’s an important time to acknowledge where we’ve come and show appreciation for the people who have supported the garden,” said garden director Jeanette Schelin “And it’s my goal to welcome those who have not discovered the garden.”
