Art in the Public Eye
It's not uncommon to encounter artwork commissioned for public spaces throughout California and the West, created by alumni of CSULB's renowned Art Department.
Travelers through Monterey County, Arizona and Iowa gaze in awe at monumental paintings including “The Big Baby,” created by John M. Cerney (1983, B.A.; www.johncerney.com) and “The Farmer and the Irrigator,” created with artist Dong Sun King.
"Earth Upon Water," above, at Signal Hill's Hilltop Park, is by Craig Cree Stone (1978, B.A.; 1980, M.A., 1988, M.F.A.), a professor in CSULB's Departments of Art and American Indian Studies.
Bronze sculptor Max DeMoss (1973, B.A., www.maxdemoss.com) forged the tabernacle and angel candleholders for the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles.
Susan Gamble (1987, M.F.A., www.santatheresatileworks.com) is owner and principal designer of Santa Theresa Tile Works in Tucson, Ariz. "UASpire #1" graces the University of Arizona, and "Una Ventana Los Vuelos Fantasticos/A Window on Fantastic Flights" is at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport.
