1980

The Western Governors’ Association presented Brian K. Johnson (1980, B.S., civil engineering) with its 2004 George S. Mickelson Memorial Fellowship for distinguished public service. Johnson is the solar energy program manager of the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department.

Janet Lavender (1980, B.S., business administration–finance) is founder and executive director of the Los Angeles affiliate of Dress for Success, a non-profit agency that provides donated business attire to low-income women. The organization recently opened the Dress 2 Impress boutique in Long Beach.

April Morris (1980, B.S., civil engineering) is chairwoman of the Inland Empire Economic Partnership that focuses on revitalizing business in San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Morris has been president and CEO of Associated Engineers Inc. for 20 years.

Anita Renee Elkins (1981, B.A., psychology; 1982, credential) was the 2004 Westside Union School District’s Teacher of the Year. She has taught history at Del Sur School for more than 12 years. The district serves the West Lancaster, West Palmdale and Quartz Hill areas of northern Los Angeles County.

Wayne Henson Baber (1982, M.S., criminology) retired from the U.S. government in 1996 and from the U.S. Air Force in 2003. He now is a private investigator.

Kimberly A. Farrell (1982, B.S., business administration– marketing) is founder and CEO of Unlimited Performance Training Inc. that provides training programs for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. She is a board member of the National Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association and received its 2004 “Star Volunteer of the Year” award.

Paul Griffo (1982, B.A., journalism), a former Daily Forty-Niner editor, is a public affairs specialist for the Federal Transit Administration in Washington, D.C. The former newspaper reporter and editor previously held communications positions for the U.S. Postal Service and U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

Susan A. Laputz (1982, B.S., business administration– accountancy), CPA, was promoted to partner in the Tax and Accounting Services Department of Windes & McClaughry Accountancy Corp. in Long Beach.

Julie Schneider Ljubenkov (1982, B.A., art; 1985, MFA) specializes in botanical paintings, particularly of plants native to San Diego and Riverside counties. Several of her paintings were exhibited in 2004 at the Contemporary Art Center of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Jennifer McDonald (1982, B.A., art) and business partner Alicia Shelton opened the Gaslamp Restaurant in Long Beach this spring.

Teresa Hirscher (1983, B.A., journalism) is now an associate with CB Richard Ellis Hawaii Inc. Her two decades of transportation industry experience include national sales and operations for Air New Zealand and Continental Airlines.

Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney Eleanor Hunter (1983, B.S., criminal justice) was named a Los Angeles Superior Court judge in February. As prosecutor, she handled the case of former Symbionese Liberation Army operative Sara Jane Olson.

Corina (Raigosa) Villaraigosa (1983, B.A., liberal studies; 1984, credential) became the first lady of the city of Los Angeles when her husband, Antonio Villaraigosa, was inaugurated mayor in July. She is a bilingual language coordinator in the Montebello Unified School District.

Carolyn Waters Broe (1984, M.F.A., music) is conductor of the Four Seasons Chamber Orchestra in Scottsdale, Ariz. Broe completed her doctorate in music at Arizona State University in 2001.

Communications Engineering and Design magazine named Marwan Fawaz (1984, B.S., electrical engineering) as its 2005 Man of the Year for his accomplishments in upgrading Adelphia Communication’s technical infrastructure. He became Adelphia’s chief technology officer in 2003.

Irvine Company Retail Properties appointed Timothy Kolvoord (1984, business administration–finance) as senior director of project management. His past management experience includes The Mills Corp., where he helped develop The Block in Orange.

1985

Jeff Hiserman (1985, B.S., physical therapy) now lives in the Williamsport, Pa., area, where he watched former Dirtbag first baseman Mike Hofius (2005, B.A., kinesiology and physical education), left, play for the Crosscutters Class A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Hofius now plays for the Pirates’ Hickory, N.C., Crawdads affiliate.

Scott T. Sullivan (1985, B.S., business administration–finance) is the new chief information officer at Edmunds.com, the online automotive information resource. He has been a technology executive with Yahoo!/Overture Services and other Internet firms.

David K. Erickson (1986, B.S., business administration–finance; 1994, MBA) is vice president of investor relations for Edwards Lifesciences Corp., which develops cardiovascular medical products and services. He is a board member of the National Investor Relations Institute.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat appointed Ted Appel (1986, B.A., journalism) as its new business editor in May. He was its government and politics editor and former assistant business editor.

Steven E. Henry (1987, B.A., political science) works for the Los Angeles County Counsel in the Children’s Court. In June 2004, Steven and his wife, Sheila, had a son, Charles Paul Henry.

Tommy Gettis (1989, B.S., industrial technology) was born and raised in Mississippi, honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1967 and is a retired manufacturing engineer.

Sherry Radmore (1989, business administration–accountancy) became the first woman partner in the Santa Ana accounting firm of Elliott, Lewis, Lieber & Stumpf Inc. Radmore is active in a variety of professional organizations.

1990

Michael Killebrew (1990, B.S., business administration– accountancy) became director of financial management for the city of Long Beach in February.

Ralph Armbruster-Sandoval (1990, B.A., political science) recently published his first book, Globalization and Cross-Border Labor Solidarity in the Americas. He is an assistant professor in the Chicana/o Studies Department at UC Santa Barbara and received his Ph.D. from UC Riverside.

George Jagatic (1991, B.S, business administration– management) is founder and artistic director of Axis Danz, the first professional flag dance company. He also teaches flag dancing for fitness.

Francie Goldstein Kugelman (1991, B.F.A., ceramics) teaches fifth grade in Eagle Rock, Calif. She and her husband, Kerry, have an eight-year-old daughter. Kugelman previously ran a corporate art gallery.

Pei Pei Wang (1991, B.S., business administration– accountancy), CPA, was promoted to partner in the Audit and Assurance Services Department of Windes & McClaughry Accountancy Corp. in Long Beach.

Victoria K. Hall (1993, B.S., chemical engineering), 2003 distinguished alumna of the College of Engineering, opened a law practice in Rockville, Md., after graduating from UC Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law in 2004. She specializes in intellectual property law.

5G Wireless Communications Inc. named Kirk L. Haney (1993, B.A., political science) as an independent director to its board. Haney is an executive in global business development for Cisco Systems Inc.

Robert C. Jorgensen (1993, B.S., construction management) now lives on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where he operates his own construction company.

Brandon J. Cruz (1994, B.A., speech communication) is a host-reporter in Denver, Colo., for two Nuggets basketball television programs. He previously was the weekend sports anchor-reporter at KOAA-TV in Colorado Springs.

Marjorie (Sutherland) Hendricks (1994, B.S., business administration–accountancy) is senior manager at the CPA firm of Pope and Associates. She married Brian Hendricks in 2003 and they now live in Santa Monica, Calif.

Scott C. Holstad (M.A., English, 1994) recently published his 15th book of poems titled Cells. A previous poetry book, Places, was nominated for the 1996 Pulitzer Prize in literature.

The city of Laguna Beach promoted Mike Macey (1994, B.V.E.; 2003, M.A., liberal studies) from battalion chief to fire chief in April. The 28-year firefighting veteran joined the Newport Beach Fire Department in 1980 before coming to Laguna Beach in 2002.

1995

Jay Hassler (1995, B.M.) is an accomplished clarinetist and the principal clarinetist for the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra and the Martha Graham Dance Company orchestra.

UC Berkeley associate head women’s volleyball coach Lee Maes (1995, B.A., broadcast journalism) was named head assistant volleyball coach at the University of Nebraska in January.

Laraine Elizabeth Turner (1996, credential) is an author, songwriter and drama teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District. She wrote the children’s book, The Rise and Fall of the Witch on the Bayou, and is listed in the 2005 edition of Marquis’ Who’s Who of America.

Clear Channel Entertainment appointed Kimberly (Crowell-Burgos) Bowron (1997, M.A., industrial organizational psychology) as senior vice president, corporate culture and philanthropy, of Clear Channel Entertainment Charities.

Kimberly D. Clark (1997, MPA) completed her doctorate in education with an emphasis in organizational leadership in December 2003. She currently is executive director of the Loker Student Union at CSU Dominguez Hills.

Traci Dahl (1997, B.A., kinesiology and physical education) became assistant women’s volleyball coach at Cal State Fullerton in June. She was a member of the 49ers’ 1993 national championship volleyball team and previously coached at Downey High School, Cerritos College and Hofstra University.

Carl Kemp (1997, B.A., black studies; 1998, MPA) was appointed director of community relations and government affairs for the Port of Long Beach. Kemp previously was manager of public and government affairs for the city of Long Beach.

Jennifer Sue (Breault) Avery (1998, B.A., sociology) is a senior deputy public administrator for Los Angeles County. Last year she received her M.S. in public administration from Cal State LA.

Aristide J. Collins Jr. (1998, MPA), CSULB’s former acting vice president for university relations and development, became vice president for advancement and a faculty member at Pacific Oaks College in Pasadena, Calif., in July. He is a doctoral candidate in organizational leadership at Pepperdine University.

Susan M. Enguidanos (1998, MPA) was appointed director of the Research Center of the Institute for Change at the Partners in Care Foundation. The institute develops programs with its health care partners and funders in geriatrics and other health care areas. Enguidanos went on to earn a Ph.D. in social work at USC.

Hyun-Jeong Joyce Kim (1998, M.A., psychology) is a professor at Rhodes College and a research scientist at the University of Memphis. She earned a Ph.D. at Northern Illinois University and is co-principal investigator in a project funded by the Office of Naval Research to analyze expert human tutors.

Lisa Lynn (1998, B.A., recreation administration) was promoted to community resource director for the city of Manhattan Beach. Lynn is working on her master’s degree from CSULB.

Mikelle Willis (1998, B.S., business administration–accounting) is the founding principal and director of the KIPP Academy of Opportunity, a Los Angeles Unified School District charter middle school.

Christina (Baker) Faix (1999, B.A., communication studies) and her husband, Brian, founded the non-profit organization “Stuffed with Lots of Love” that delivers stuffed animals to children in hospitals and homeless shelters. They married in March 2004.
