Magazines for Libraries (REF PN4832 M23 Year) Bill Katz, editor. Describes hundreds of journals, serials, periodicals received generally received by libraries. Describes their philosophy, editorial practices and indicated where that journal is indexed.
Ulrich's International Periodical Directory. (REF DESK AO2 U5 Year). A comprehensive listing of journals published worldwide. See volume 5 for "Refereed Serials" list.
Browsing recent history journals can be quite valuable for finding current or "hot topics" for research. You may also want to take a look at how they are described in Magazines for Libraries or Ulrich's International Periodical Directory mentioned above.
The library has access to hundreds of scholarly history and history related journals. First search for periodical under Journal Title in COAST. If you don't see it there, go to the Full Text Electronic Journal Holdings. You might find your history journal in one of our many full text research databases.

VIEW LIST OF EARLY AMERICAN NEWSPAPERS IN MICROCARD, 1702-1834. Useful for reading primary articles about North America from Colonial times to the early federal period. These newspapers are located in Lower Level Storage.
Chronicling America. Historic American Newspapers As of mid 2007, this Library of Congress produced site contains about 25 American newspapers published from 1900-1910. Full text searchable and viewable. It includes the west coast newspaper, San Francisco Call. This is only the beginning. The website says that in in the next 20 years, " the National Digital Newspaper Program will create a national, digital resource of historically significant newspapers published between 1836 and 1922 from all U.S. states and territories.
Early American Newspapers, 1609-1876 provides fully searchable, cover-to-cover reproductions of more than one million pages from more than 650 historical American newspapers. Northern and “Old Northwest” newspapers are covered up until 1876. Southern newspaper coverage stops by the 1820s.
These resources may be relevant to research in World History. They are available in the Main Library, or if you are a student or Faculty member at CSULB you may be able to access most from home. Academic Search Elite. A large interdisciplinary index and full text database of over 1300 full text and 1800 citation only journals. Journal articles go back to the early 1990s to the present date. CSULB authentication required
America History and Life. The premier periodical index for research in U.S. history. It provides citation and abstract indexing for 2400 scholarly journals, review articles and dissertations covering the culture and history of the U.S. and Canada from prehistoric times to the present. It covers publication years 1950s to date. For world history, use Historical Abstracts.
Article First (CSULB authentication required). Comprehensive "citation only" database to over 12,000 different scholarly and popular journals. A good database to cover a wide range of interdisciplinary social science and science journals.
Combined Retrospective Index to Journals in History. (REF D1 C18). Multiple volume index for finding old journals. Volumes are arranged by geographic region. Entries are arranged by keyword in title. The index covers articles in scholarly journals published from 1838-1974.
Early American Imprints, Series I: Evans, 1639-1800 It is the definitive resource for information about every aspect of life in 17th- and 18th-century America, from agriculture and auctions through foreign affairs, diplomacy, literature, music, religion, the Revolutionary War, temperance, and witchcraft. The collection consists of more than 37,000 full text books, pamphlets and broadsides.
America’s Historical Newspapers, 1690-1876 (Formerly Early American Newspapers, Series 1) provides fully searchable, cover-to-cover reproductions of more than one million pages from more than 650 historical American newspapers. Northern and “Old Northwest” newspapers are covered up until 1876. Southern newspaper coverage stops by the 1820s.
Early American Periodicals Index To 1850. (Lower Level Storage, in red microcard boxes). This eight box microcard set indexes American periodicals from 1728-1850. Most notably for history research are: Box 1. General Prose: authors and anonymous titles, (1 box); Box 5. Book Reviews: authors and anonymous titles, (1 box); and Boxes 7-8. Subjects.
Ebsco Online. Provides electronic full text access to over 400 journals Additionally it indexes many more citation only journals. Emphasis is on scholarly publications.
Factiva. Primarily a business database, but it also has full text searchable access to over 6000 newspaper and popular magazines. CSULB authentication required.
Historical Chicago Defender 1905-1975. An African American newspaper important for historical research on civil rights, segregation, African American migration, anti-lynching legislation, the modern civil rights movement and radical issues of the 1960s.
Historical Los Angeles Times, 1881-1984. (Currently full text up to1976). Full text, page to page content of the Los Angeles Times. Includes complete articles, photographs, advertisements, classified ads, legal notices, comics, editorials, commentary, letters to the editor, sports, radio and television schedules.
Historical New York Times, 1851-2001. Full text, page to page content of the New York Times. Includes complete articles, photographs, advertisements, classified ads, legal notices, comics, editorials, commentary, letters to the editor, sports, radio and television schedules.
Historical Abstracts. The premier index for searching modern world history. It provides citation and abstract indexing for over 2000 scholarly journals, books, book reviews, and Ph.D. dissertations covering world history (exclusive of the United States and Canada) from 1450 to the present. Coverage: late 1950s to date. For U.S. and Canadian history use America History & Life.
Humanities Index. A citation and abstract index to over 400 scholarly periodicals in the humanities, including history. Goes back to publication years 1984 online. From 1974-1984 use the Humanities Index in REF AI 3 I59. For the years 1906-1974 use the International Index in REF A13 I57.
JSTOR. A growing archive of full text core scholarly journals. Digitizes the complete backfiles of selected journals in the areas of: African-American studies, anthropology, Asian studies, ecology, economics, education, finance, history, literature, mathematics, philosophy, political science, statistics, sociology, and population/demography. Coverage: not a current file. Most current issues of the JSTOR journals are two to five years old. CSULB authentication required.
Making of America, Cornell. Provides access to more than 20 full text online magazines from the 1800s. The Cornell site accesses different titles than the
Making of America, University of Michigan. Provides access to 10 full text journals (different than the site above) from the 1800s.To search journal articles, click on Go to MoA Journals.
Lexis Nexis Academic. Provides full text searchable access to several thousand journals, newspapers, newsletters, newswires, and international publications. Coverage begins around the 1970s to the present. CSULB authentication required.
New York Times Article Archive. 1851 to Date. You can freely search for NYT article citations back to 1851 on this website. But if you want to view any of the complete articles there is a charge. However, the library has the entire microfilm of the NYT. If you are a CSULB student or faculty, better yet to use the online Historical New York Times 1851-2001.
19th Century Masterfile. CSULB subscribes to Series I of the 19th Century Masterfile. It accesses over one million journal citations published from 1786-1922 and includes the contents of four 19th Century periodical indexes: Poole's Index to Periodical Literature, 1802-1906; Index to Periodicals, 1890-1902; Index to Legal Periodical Literature, 1786-1922; and An Alphabetical Subject Index and Index Encyclopedia to Periodical Articles on Religion, 1890-1899.
Project Muse. An online full text access to more than 160 scholarly journals including 30 history titles. See Periodicals Chart above for a list of journals available in Project Muse.
Readers Guide Abstracts. Covers popular magazines and journals. You can find articles published from 1984 to the present.
Reader's Guide Retrospective. Covers popular magazines from 1890 through 1983. Useful to find contemporary accounts of any event in the 20th Century.

CIS U.S. Serial Set Index. (REF J74 C65). An important research tool for finding early original documents of the U.S. Congress, hearings, reports, and executive branch publications for the years 1789-1969. The U.S. Serial Set is in several locations. For the years 1789-1817 it is available through the internet and is called the American State Papers. In the library the American State Papers are located in MICROCARD in the Federal Documents section of Library.. For the years 1817-1931, is called the U.S. Serial Set, and is located in MICROCARD in Federal Documents. For the years 1932-1962, the Serial Set can be found in MICROFICHE in the Reference Section on Library. Since 1963- the Serial Set can be found BOUND in Federal Documents. From 1837 to 1917 selected U.S. Serial Set documents can now be found on the internet. And after 1995 the Serial Set can be accessed from GPO ACCESS U.S. Congressional Serial Set.
Congressional Globe available on the internet. In the library see call number (J11 G5). Available Bound, in Storage and in Microfilm. Records the debates and proceedings of the Congress from 1833-1873. Preceded by Debates and Proceedings in the Congress of the United States (Storage J11 A5), which covers the years 1789-1824. It is available on the 'Net as The Annals of Congress.
Foreign Relations of the United States. (KX233 A3). Full text of key foreign relations documents spanning the years 1932-1968. Internet access is available to selected post World War II volumes of Foreign Relations of the United States.
Index, the Papers of the Continental Congress 1774-1798. (J10 A1 B874 1978). 5 vols.
Statutes At Large. (REF KF50 U5). The library has the complete original (microfilm or paper) versions of all laws passed by the U.S. Congress from 1789 to the present. (Microfilm in Reference from 1789-1931. Bound in STORAGE from 1931 to date, under call number REF KF50 U5). You can view the Statutes at Large on the internet for the years 1789-1875.
Treaties and Other International Agreements. (KX231 A33). 12 volume set comprising of full text of key treaties spanning the years 1776-1949.

American Periodicals, 1741-1900. The printed guide, under (REF AI3 H667). lists periodicals published between 1741-1900. The library has many of these original periodicals in microfilm reels. See also 19th Century Masterfile for subject access to many of these periodicals for the years 1800-1906.
American Culture Series, 1493-1875: A Cumulative Guide to the Microfilm Collection. Subject, author, title guide in (REF E156 A583). This is a large collection of books printed in America from 1493-1875. All can be found by reel number microfilm under the series name "American Culture Series" with their original text. Consult the guide for the microfilm reel number.
Bibliotheca Americana: A Dictionary of Books Relating to America From Its Discovery to the Present Time. Printed guide under (REF Z1201 S2). A multi-volume listing of books from early America. The guide directs you to which books we have in microform. See also, The New Sabin (REF Z1201 T45) a newer, cleaned-up edition of Bibliotheca Americana.
History of Women, Guide to the Microfilm Collection. Printed guide under (HQ1121 .H5 1983). A subject, author, and title guide to hundreds of microfilm reels available in the library. CSULB has the reels from 1830-69 and 1906-20. CSU, Fullerton has reels for 1870-1905 and UCI has reels previous to 1830.
