An index to the practical and research literature in sport and fitness; also includes indexing from the previous Sport & Leisure bibliographic database of SIRLS, covering the research literature for the social and psychological aspects of sport and leisure, including play, games, and dance. Coverage is 1975 to date. Updated quarterly.
ERIC: Educational Resources Information Center
Good source for references to journal articles and documents on the education aspect of recreation and leisure studies. References to thousands of educational topics. Coverage is 1966 to date. Updated monthly.
Academic Search Elite
General subject database containing indexing and abstracts for nearly 3,000 journals, with many dating back to 1984. Academic Search Elite also provides full-text of articles for over 1,200 journals, with some dating back to 1990. Updated continuously.
Physical Education Index
In addition to subjects from kinesiology and physical education, sports medicine, and dance, also covers recreation, sports law, and many other related topics.
Newspapers
Source for U.S. and international news. Includes coverage of 150+ major U.S. and international newspapers such as The New York Times and the Times of London, plus hundred of other news sources and news wires. Many articles are full text. Updated daily.
Lexis Nexis Academic
Good source for full text of journal and newspaper articles. Newspapers, journals, legal digests and reports, and other publications covering economic, business, medical, social science and popular culture issues. Most files started between 1970 and 1985 and continue to the present. Some legal materials (laws, court reporters, law digests) go back to 1799.
ABI/INFORM Global
Indexes and provides full text for many of the 1,500 world wide business periodicals covering information on topics such as advertising, marketing, economics, human resources, non-profit organizations, finance, taxation, computers, and more. Coverage is 1971 to date.
GPO Monthly Catalog
Index to U.S. federal government publications. Coverage is 1976 to date.
Social Sciences Abstracts
Provides citations and abstracts for English-language journals in sociology, anthropology, geography, economics, political science, and law. Coverage is 1983 to date. Updated monthly.
These internet sites have the "seal of approval" from the Rec & Leisure librarian, and may be a useful starting point to do web research.
The Academy of Leisure Sciences
Primarily an honory organization, the Academy also undertakes projects related to leisure and recreational studies. Publishes a series of "white papers" which are available on the site; also sponsors other programs directed toward scholars and students.
American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA)
AAPRA is an organization dedicated to the advancement of the park and recreation field. The academy publishes the Journal of Park and Recreation Administration.
American Association for Leisure and Recreation (AALR)
The site for AALR states the mission of the association is "to promote and support education, leisure, and recreation by developing quality programming and professional training; providing leadership opportunities; disseminating guidelines and standards; and, enhancing public understanding of the importance of leisure and recreation in maintaining a creative and healthy lifestyle."
American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA)
Site for ATRA, an organization representing the interests and needs of recreational therapists.
California Department of Fish and Game
Department of Fish and Game official website.
California Park & Recreation Society (CPRS)
Website for California Park & Recreation Society which states as its objective "to provide leadership to advance the positive impact and value of the profession." Site has interesting links to other websites.
California State Parks
Information about the State parks in California.
City of Long Beach
Official site of Long Beach city government, access to web connections for tourism & recreation in the city, including the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Marine.
Leisure Information Network
Addresses recreation, sport, culture and lifestyle enhancement. Web site states this is "your starting place on the web for finding resources and sharing information."
Mapping the National Parks - U.S.
Part of the Library of Congress American Memory Project. According to the site, "documents the history, cultural aspects and geological formations of areas that eventually became National Parks."
The National Park Service: NatureNet
Primarily aimed at the general public, but some parts also serve park employees. Has link to information on air quality, wildlife and plants, geology, water resources, and people in the national parks. On this same "Nature Net" page the area "Science" contains information of interest to academics, such as research programs in the national parks, information on the ecological research fellowship program, student opportunities, sabbaticals in the parks, use statistics for public parks, GIS data, and much more on these pages and on the rest of the NatureNet site.

Web site for an organization dedicated to supporting and protecting our national parks.
National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA Online)
Internet site of the National Recreation and Park Association.
