Census of Government by the U.S. Census provides data on federal government budget, spending,federal employee payroll and retirement, and tax collections.

State and Local Government Statistics by University of Michigan Library provides links to various statistical sites some specific to public finance.

State Government Tax Collections by the U.S. Census provides up to 25 data categories on state tax collections.

State Taxes and Spending by the Tax Foundation provides data on each state and it's income, taxation and spending.

California:

California Department of Finance by State of California has budget data and information for the state.

California Local Government Finance Almanac by Michael Coleman of Coleman Advisory Services. Data, statistics, analyses, and articles on California city and county finance.

California Statistical Abstracts by California Department of Finance.The sections of interest are public finance and comparative fiscal and economic data for the states. The data is available in both excel and .pdf format.

California State Treasurers Office, Public Finance Division provides on California bonds, general state funds, economic recovery and cash flow.

Public Finance Sources by University of Santa Barbara. This guide, much like this one, provides recommendations on finding public finance and budgetary resources.

Associations, Think Tanks or Organizations

Government Finance Officers Association provides materials like Best Practices in Public Budgeting, recommended policies on cash management, budgeting and fiscal policy, etc. and many research reports. TIP: Note the date of publication, you can only view this when you look at the document. TIP: There are state association, California Society of Municipal Financial Officers has documents specific to California budgeting.

National Association of Counties provides reports in public finance and budgeting, especially information coming from the federal government that affects counties.

National Conference on State Legislaturesis a lobbying association thatpublishes papers on budgeting and finance for government.

National League of Cities provides data,trends and educational information on public finance,as well as how Municipal Finance and Budgeting process works, Revenues, Expenditures and Cities Fiscal Condition from their Cities 101 data source.

National Council of State Legislatures an association that has reports on state budgets and taxes.

National Association of State Budget Officers that provides reports on state fiscal standing and budgeting process within the states.

National Center for Policy Analysis is a think tank thathas reports on state and local budgets, taxes or spending, plus a section on federal spending.

Public Policy Institute of California is a think tank provides reports on California public finance.

Center on Budget and Policy Priorities is a think tank that provides data on federal budget and state fiscal policies.

Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government is a think tank that provides reports and data on state and local finance.

Urban Institute is a research organization that contains studies on state and local fiscal policy and federal fiscal policy. They also have a section on the future of the public sector. National Priorities Project is a nonpartisan organization that provides information on the impact of federal tax and spending policiesat the community level.

Office of Management and Budget under the U.S. President is a federal agency that reviews federal spending and budget management. There is a non-profit watch group called OMB Watch, they also give a spin on the federal and state budgets.

Public Agenda is a nonpartisan opinion research group that gives information on the federal budget. They also have a fact file that provides statistics and graphs on various spending within the federal budget. There are discussion papers, opinion on budgeting priorities, etc.

Grading the States is part of the Government Performance Project by Pew Charitable Trusts. An area studied is Money and Infrastructure.

Financial Management Service by Department of Treasury. This site contains reports and statistics on debt collection, all the publications by the Dept. of Treasury, unclaimed money, etc.

Specific State, County & City Finance

Comprehensive Listing of California Cities and Counties by International City/County Management Association provides a complete listing of city government web sites for California plusthe other 49 states.

Local Budgets and Finances Online by CSU, Northridge is a directory of web resources onLos Angeles (CA) areabudgets and finances.

County of Orange (CA) - Finance and Budget contains information on the budget and process for Orange (CA) county.

City of Long Beach(CA) information on budget and budgeting strategic plan.

City of Los Angeles (CA)-City Administrator Office City/county information on thebudget and demographics.

Fiscal Policy Institute (NY) deals with taxes,budget, economic policies that affect the quality of lifeand economy of New York residents.

California Legislative Analyst's Office (LAO)provides fiscal and programmatic expertise and nonpartisan analyses of the state of California's budget. They occasionally review local government fiscal programs.


Find Books, Reports and Government Information

Use COAST the library online catalog to find books and reports and their location. Search by title, keyword or subject.

The best way to search COAST is by subject term.Consider the following subjectto use:
Finance, public and use any of the26 other recommended subjects; Local Finance and any ofthe 6 recommended subjects;or Municipal Finance and any of the other 6 recommended subjects.

Another way to get a good selection of books is to browse the shelves or call number areas. This includes HJ11 to HJ9995 public finance;and JS39 to JS8350 local government.
