The CSULB Library Catalog

COAST is used for finding Books, Government Documents, Video Recordings, Sound Recordings and Theses available at CSULB.

You can search for items using:

  • Keywords (i.e. the terms that best describe your topic)
  • Author (last name first, firs name)
  • Title
  • Subject (you must used the approved Library of Congress Subject Headings -- see a librarian for assistance)
  • Library of Congress Call Number
  • International Standard Book Number (ISBN)

You can also use COAST to search for specific journal titles.  Only use this option if you have a citation to a specific article.  If you are in the early stages of your research, and do NOT have a specific article you are trying to find begin by searching in the library's psychology databases.

Citing Sources

When writing a paper in psychology the rules of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association
govern the manner in which references within the paper and bibliography are formatted.

The library has other resources that may be of help when it's time to format your papers:

There are also reputable web sites available to assist in formatting your bibliogrpahies in almost any style (e.g. APA, MLA, Chicago Manual, Turabian).  To see the most current list of available web resources click here.

Article Databases

The library subscribes to dozens of article databases, each of which creates lists of articles contained in hundreds, sometimes thousands, of publications.  These lists can be searched to find articles on almost any, and every, topic imaginable.  Most of the databases contain at least some full-text (i.e. you can get the article from the database you are searching).

NOTE: If you are planning to access the subscription databases from a computer that is not on campus you may be required to complete an authentication login.  For information on accessing the databases from off-campus click here.

Databases that psychology students have found useful include:

  • PsycArticles: Provides online, full-text access to the articles from journals published by the American Psychological Association and the Canadian Psychological Association.

  • PsycInfo: contains millions of citations from scholarly (i.e. peer-reviewed) journals.  In addition to psychology and psychiatry, areas of study covered by the database include medicine, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology, physiology, linguistics, anthropology, business and law. The database has some full-text.

  • Mental Measurements Yearbook: use this database to get online, full-text access to thousands of reviews of questionnaires, surveys, and other test instruments.

  • ScienceDirect: a mostly full-text database that offers access to more than 1,800 journals.  The database includes articles in many areas, including psychology.  The articles are often highly technical, and focused on a very specific topic.

  • Wiley InterScience: a mostly full-text database that includes coverage in the fields of psychology, medicine, mathematics, business, and computer science.  THe database offers a broad range of articles from general overviews to the highly-focused.
