To locate journal, magazine or newspaper articles and other types of documents, you must use indexes or databases. You can use these selected electronic indexes/databases to find articles on minority health topics. If the document is not full text, you will have to check COAST to see if it is available in the Library.

Academic Search Complete

Advantage: Can limit your search for full text articles, a specific journal, date published and peer reviewed journals

Academic Universe (Lexis/Nexis)

Search tips: Select News and then General News and click on down arrow for Source category to select Magazines & Journals. There are about 123 health journals, bulletins, and newsletters searched in this source category. Also click on down arrow for Date and select appropriate time category. OR select Medical and then Medical Journals. There are about 17 health journals not available in the Magazines & Journals source category.

AIDSLINE
Advantage: Primarily scholarly/academic/research, on clinical aspects and health policy issues
Coverage: 1980 to the present
Disadvantage: Does not provide full-text articles but abstracts (when available)

Document types: Journals, government reports, letters, technical reports, meeting abstracts/papers, monographs, special publications, theses, books and audiovisuals
Restrictions: Web access only
Search tips: Type term in "Search for" box under Enter Query Terms: and click on Find MeSH/Meta Terms to take advantage of the online dictionary/thesaurus of subject headings. Select appropriate subject heading which takes you to a National Library of Medicine: IGM Metathesaurus Information Screen. This screen typically includes synonyms, definition, MeSH hierarchical positions, entry dates, and previous indexing information. Click on "green light" icon if subject heading is acceptable and features, such as, "major topic" restriction, or subheading qualifiers. When returned to the National Library of Medicine: Internet Grateful Med Search Screen, you may repeat the process several times for other terms. When all terms are found and limits are applied, click on Perform Search. MeSH includes Ethnic Groups; Asian Americans; Blacks; Eskimos; Hispanic Americans; Indians; North American.

Search tips: You may browse through citations organized by CAM system, disease or method. (This does not allow for the entering of minority group terms.) OR You may perform a search of the database. Search tips: Use subject code 0631 for Sociology, Ethnic and Racial Studies and appropriate health science subject code: 0566 for Health Sciences, General: 0380 for Health Sciences, Obstetrics and Gynecology; 0573 for Health Sciences, Public Health in subject (su). Can also use keyword (key) to search for specific terms.
