A well-organized main page contains a site index that can be searched alphabetically or by subject headings. The site can also be searched by keyword topic. If the site search index retrieves a specific meta-guide for the topic, its homepage will contain evaluated Web sites and articles selected by an online expert guide. A useful part of these very navigable pages is the inclusion of briefly annotated Net Links concerning or related to the topic. If a keyword search does not locate an expert guide page, the search engine will provide related Internet sites.

Fast and efficient, this is the search engine to start with for new, used, fine, and out-of-print books. It searches Advanced Book Exchange, Amazon, Antiqbook, Bibliocity, Bibliofind, and Powell's Books at once. 10,000,000 books, 10,000 bookdealers.
The Booklist Center
This site compiles of 258 booklists of award winning books in 68 subject categories. If you need a list of titles by award name (e.g National Book Award for Fiction).
Direct Search
Contains links to over 800 resource specific search interfaces better designed to uncover information often missed by the big search engines. The sites are grouped under broad headings such as Archives and Library Catalogs, Bibliographies, Business, Humanities, Science, Government, and more. Not searchable.
Fifty States and Capitals
Organizes links to information on each state, including useful geographic, demographic, political, historical, economic and tourist information.
The Gallup Organization
This site contains a wealth of information for researchers on opinion polls and trends. Polls in the recent news are highlighted on the homepage. "Gallup Poll" tab features the latest released poll and an archive of polls arranged by topic and going back to 1997.
How Stuff Works
Articles at this web site explain how ordinary "stuff" works, e.g. electricity, car engines, the human body, ATMS, tattoos.
Infomine: Scholarly Internet Resource Collections
INFOMINE is intended for the introduction and use of Internet/Web resources of relevance to faculty, students, and research staff at the university level. It is being offered as a comprehensive showcase, virtual library and reference tool containing highly useful Internet/Web resources including databases, electronic journals, electronic books, bulletin boards, listservs, online library card catalogs, articles and directories of researchers, among many other types of information.
Information Please
Includes the contents of the Information Please Almanacs, their own biography database, "a leading dictionary," and the Columbia Encyclopedia online. You can search these ready reference works together or separately or browse the Almanacs.
Internet Public Library Pathfinders
These are great starting points for a wide variety of topics -- indie and punk rock, international adoption, mutual funds, history of clothing, Downs syndrome, literary criticism, genealogy, etc. They present key print and Internet resources, subject headings to search with, Dewey number to browse in, and more.
JAKE
"Jake is a reference source which makes finding, managing, and linking online journals and journal articles easier for students, researchers, and librarians. jake does this by managing metadata about online resources with a database union list, title authority control, and linking tools, as well as making it easy to customize for a specific library's holdings."
Libns' Index
The Librarians' Index to the Internet is an annotated directory database of more than 5,500 Web resources useful to the information seeker. Entries assigned subject headings and categorized by Best of..., Directories, Databases, and Specific Resources. Keyword search that includes the annotation is the default.
lib-web-cats
This database includes links to and information on more than 4,000 online catalogs and library Web pages world-wide. In addition to being able to search by Institution name or Library Type and/or geographical location, the Advanced Query Form allows searching or limiting by any combination of the above as well as by Library name, type of Automation System, previous system, and several types of affiliations. You can also chose to display the Full Record for each entry (which can include such details as address of library, date automated system was installed, number of volumes in the collection, and OCLC symbol).
OCLC Periodicals Title Finder
The Title Finder includes information such as the beginning and ending date for citations and full text articles indexed in FirstSearch databases, obtained directly from data provided by the database producers. Users can search for a title to determine which database(s) in the FirstSearch service index it.

A directory of over 17,000 free, full-text books and documents from a wide variety of sources.
PubList.com
Comprehensive directory of information about more than 150,000 publications and more than 8000 newspapers around the world. PubList.com information comes from definitive sources such as Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory.
Refdesk.com
It is a little too densely packed with lists, but still fairly easy to navigate by browsing the well-organized categories on the homepage or by using the well-placed, user friendly search engine. The Reference Resources and Facts Search sections provide links to a wide array of ready reference sources, from Acronym Finder to Zip+4 code Lookup.

Europa World Yearbook
Available in print: REF AG 105 E85
Countries are listed alphabetically. The Yearbook provides you with an overview of all countries worldwide. It includes information about government, trade, judicial systems, religion and most importantly, an entire section of the press systems. While it does not provide analysis it will give you a listing of principals media outlets and major press associations.
Handbook of Media in Asia

Divided by countries of different regions of Asia. Includes countries like: India, Nepal, Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines and more. This book describes each country and provides the following information: demographics, government and politics, history of the press system in that country, policies and legal framework for the press, statistics, lists of major media outlets and a bibliography for further reading.
InterAmerican Press Association: Press Laws Database
This website includes country reports of press laws and legislation for the Americas including: Argentina, Canada, Jamaica, Peru, Venezuela and more!
BBC Country Profiles
This site is produced by the BBC News. It provides media information for every country profiled. To get to the list of countries you must first select a geographic region (located on the left hand of the screen). You will then get a pull down menu of all the countries (sometimes very near the bottom of the page). Click on the link entitled Media in the country profile and it will provide information regarding press law, major broadcasting companies other relevant information.
Freedom House Country Reports
This site provides brief summaries of press laws and political conditions effecting press freedom. Covers all most all countries- a good starting place when selecting a country.
World press encyclopedia
Available in print: PN4735 .W6 2002
This title is arranged by alphabetically by country. Even though it is a little old, you will find the basic outline of press systems throughout the world. Please Note: If you are doing a county which has had a major change of government or civil conflict- this press system may have changed drastically from the date this book was written.

This electronic book provides an overview of the media in China with a discussion of the role of the media in today's regime. Published by the Center for the Study of Intelligence.

Articles from International Newspapers can be found by region or specific title. Finding newspapers by region in Factiva: 1. Click on "Region" 2. Click on the name of the region or the +/- sign next to the Region to view individual countries. 3. Click on individual countries to select them. You will then be able to type your additional terms in the search box.

Starting places for writers after 1982:
Lexis Nexis Academic
If you go to the "News" section of Academic Universe and select the "more options" tab. Once you do that you will have the option of searching by Author. Just type in the first and last name of your author. Remember to select the appropriate dates. Make sure your author has published in publications carried by Academic Universe. To check just click on "sources".
Newspapers: Proquest
This database allows you to search for articles written by specific authors. From the main screen click on the "Guided" search tab. From the next screen you will be able to select "author"- just type in the name of your author. You will then find articles written by that author if they are published in newspapers.
Factiva
Factiva allows you to search for articles written by an author in a variety of sources at once. Not only does it contain major newspapers but also more popular magazines. To search for a specific author, select "Publications Library" then in the search box type the following: BY= your author's name here. Make sure you have selected the "all publications" option at the bottom of the search screen and the appropriate date.
Reader's Guide Abstracts
This will provide articles published in more popular publications like Rolling Stone Magazine and GQ. This does not have the full text so you will have to see if the publication is available at CSULB or take advantage of our interlibrary loan service for the public library in Long Beach. Blue Eagle: American Media Columnists

MLA International Bibliography
This is an excellent source for finding analysis of a well-known writer's literary style or of the genre of literary journalism as a whole. Good terms to use are: the author's name or the word journalism combined with either prose, rhetoric or literary.

This source can help you find local chapters and links to organization web sites for identifying appropriate interview candidates.
Findlaw Directory of Government Officials
This resource allows you to link directly to government agencies or search by job title or name for both Federal and State Governments.
Newspapers (ProQuest)
This database allows you to search for articles by article types. On the first screen you will be able to select "Article Type"- select the "interview" option. You will then find articles that give you interviews of a person that have been conducted in news publications if any exist.
You can search the transcripts of major news programs if you are looking for interviews or quotes from figures in the news. Just go to "News" and select the option for "transcripts" you can then just enter the name of the person or the topic you want to find.
This database has even more transcripts than lexis nexis including the Oprah Winfrey Show, NPR and a variety of cable news network shows (CNN, FOX and MSNBC) To get to them, just select Source and then in the pull down menu that says "Factiva Group Category" select Publications by type. Scroll down until you see the heading Transcripts and select.

Founded in 1977, this organization provides information for investigative reporting as well as past reports they have created.
Investigative Reporters and Editors INC
This organization also provides a variety of content and information on their sites. This site wants you to become a member to view full text of some documents such as particular journal articles- but since you are an investigative reporter- you should be able to find the articles in Lexis Nexis or Factiva or Newspapers (Proquest) for FREE!

A nonprofit institution that helps improve policy and decision making through research and analysis. The Gallup poll is an great source for finding American attitudes nationwide. Some topics include: opinions on assisted suicide, smoking, views on Kenneth Starr, Presidential Elections, homosexuality and more. It covers 1939-the current date. Most current volumes are available in Reference.
Program on International Policy Attitudes (PIPA)
This page provides detailed reports (many free of charge) regarding attitudes towards various international policies. Some topics covered include: Americans on Iraq Reconstruction, General Support for Military Action, biotechnology and terrorism.

This title provides American views on Political parties, organic food, immigration, women's roles, life satisfaction and more. I like this title because it provides attitudes for a wide variety of topics.
Newspapers: Proquest
This database allows you to search for articles that specifically provide statistics. From the main screen click on the "Guided" Search tab. From the next screen you will be able to select "Article Type"- select the "statistics" option. You will then find articles that give you statistics about your topic if any exist.
Searching the Internet for special reports can be good too. Make sure you know the name of the sponsoring organization (you can find this from a newspaper article or if it is mentioned with a specific graph used in a book.) Make sure to use a good search engine like google.com and always go to the ADVANCED search option so you can limit to either .org or .gov sites.
