Merriam-Webster's Geographical Dictionary. 3rd ed. (REF G103.5 .W42 1998). A standard geographical reference work providing brief descriptive entries for thousands of place-names.

Magazines for Libraries. (REF PN4832 M23 year). Describes hundreds of journals, serials, periodicals received generally received by libraries. Describes their philosophy, editorial practices and indicated where that journal is indexed.
Ulrich's Periodical Directory (REF DESK AO2 U5 Year). A comprehensive listing of journals published worldwide. "Refereed Serials" are are noted in the title list with a bullet.
Browsing recent geography journals can be quite valuable for finding current or "hot topics" for research. You may also want to take a look at how they are described in Magazines for Libraries or Ulrich's Periodical Directory mentioned above.
The library has print and online access to hundreds of scholarly history and history related journals. First search for periodical under Journal Title in COAST. If you don't see it there, go to the Full Text Electronic Journal Holdings. You might find your history journal in one of our many full text research databases.
Academic Search Complete A large interdisciplinary index and full text database of over 1300 full text and 1800 citation only journals. Journal articles go back to the early 1990s to the present date. CSULB authentication required
Article First (CSULB authentication required). Comprehensive "citation only" database to over 12,000 different scholarly and popular journals. A good database to cover a wide range of interdisciplinary social science and science journals.
Current Geographical Publications (G 112 A5). Library has 1945 - 2002 in print. An ndex for current U.S. and English language geographical research. You can also also find it online from 1985 to date in the Online Geographical Bibliography.
Ebsco Online (CSULB authentication required). Provides electronic full text access to over 400 journals Additionally it indexes many more citation only journals. Emphasis is on scholarly publications.
Factiva Primarily a business database, but it also has full text searchable access to over 6000 newspaper and popular magazines. CSULB authentication required.
GEOBASE. Worldwide literature of physical and cultural geography, cartography, environmental science, geology and climatology. It contains nearly 1 million entries going back to 1980. 2000 scholarly journals are fully covered, it also contains several thousand citations from reports, proceedings and book chapters. CSULB authentication required.
Geographical Abstracts Human Geography and Geographical Abstracts: Physical Geography. (REF G1 G3319) Elsevier. 1966 to 1980 in REF. This indexes over 900 geography journals, books, conference proceedings, and reports. See GEOBASE above for coverage after 1980.
JSTOR (CSULB authentication required). A growing archive of full text core scholarly journals. Digitizes the complete backfiles of selected journals in the areas of: African-American studies, anthropology, Asian studies, ecology, economics, education, finance, history, literature, mathematics, philosophy, political science, statistics, sociology, and population/demography. Coverage: not a current file. Most current issues of the JSTOR journals are two to five years old.
Lexis Nexis Academic Provides full text searchable access to several thousand journals, newspapers, newsletters, newswires, and international publications. Coverage begins around the 1970s to the present. CSULB authentication required.
Science Direct (CSULB Authentication Required). CSULB subscribes to over 1000 full text electronic scholarly journals in this database. It contains a good number of social science and physical science journals of relevance to geographers.
Humanities and Social Sciences Index Retrospective. Covers journal content from 1907-1984. After 1984 search Social Sciences Abstracts online. This index covers about 400 scholarly social science journals.
Wiley Interscience (CSULB Authentication Required). Full text access to over 300 scholarly journals. For geography, this database contains a number of earth science related journals.

Dissertations and Theses CSULB Authentication Required). Doctoral dissertations and masters theses from over 1,000 North American and European universities. Coverage: 1861 to date. You can view the first 24 pages of PhD dissertations and masters theses produced after 1997 and the full text of masters theses produced by CSULB after 1997.
Located on the Second Floor Lobby of the Library, it contains approximately 30,000 maps, including USGS topographic maps at 1:24,000 of the western U.S., hundreds of roadmaps from all over the world. It also has detailed geologic maps of the U.S., topographic maps of foreign countries, aeronautical charts, nautical charts, historical maps, and map catalogs.

I Map L.A. An easy to use GIS mapping site for the city of Los Angeles. You can find parcel information or can map the city for redevelopment zones, political sub-districts, paving projects, flood zones, and other types of political or economic districts.
MSN Maps and Directions (formerly MapBlast!) Create your own maps, e-mail or download them. Mostly U.S. maps. It provides driving directions and distances.
MapQuest Another 'create your own' site. Has more that 3 million mappable sites, both within the U.S. and internationally.

Rand McNally: The Travel Site Create maps, find driving directions. Provides good detail on street maps.

Perry Castaneda Library at University of Texas-Austin The map library has digitized hundreds of its maps and has them available for your viewing and printing. Plus you will find scores of useful geography and GIS sites.
SCAMP Southern California Aerial Mapping Project: Find Geologic Maps: "SCAMP mainly produces general-purpose geologic-maps and associated information. The information is made available in digital form, together with geologic-map plots generated from the digital data" SCAMP is a cooperative project between the U.S. Geological Survey and the California Geological Survey.
Terraserver USA Click and point map of the world will bring you detailed satellite imagery. Accesses images of North America and Europe. Up to 60 countries provided. It provides side links to topographic maps, city maps and even news links related to the area. An excellent site.
TopoZone Seamless access to more than 56,000 USGS topographic quadrangles. As TopoZone self-describes, "We've got every USGS 1:100,000, 1:25,000, and 1:24,000 scale map for the entire United States; Alaska (1:63,360)." User beware: some areas are not available, some important marginalia data, and map data are not provided.
