Use the following databases to help you find journal articles related to Nutrition & Dietetics.  For a complete A-Z list (with descriptions) of all the research databases at the CSULB Library, please click HERE.

Academic Search Complete

This is a good, general partially full-text database that works well for most Nutrition and Dietetics topics.



AGRICOLA [AGRICultural OnLine Access]

The official database for the National Agricultural Library (and its cooperators), it has section to search either books (1970 to the present) in its collection, or journal articles (1979 to date) relating to agriculture but also on food and nutrition.

CINAHL [Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature]

This database covers all topics related to nursing, health care delivery, and allied health topics, which includes nutrition and dietetics.

Taylor & Francis Online Journals

This full-text database has primarily science related journal articles, but they cover nutrition and dietetics as well.



General Science Abstracts

As its title suggests, this is a general science database that covers many scientific topics, including nutrition and dietetics.



Medline

Accesses more than 3,500 journals published internationally, covering all areas of medicine, including the medical side of nutrition.



Nutrition Abstracts & Reviews Series A

This is THE starting place for online Nutrition research.  This database covers the latest information on all issues related to food and health and features all aspects of human nutrition, including: techniques, foods, physiology and biochemistry, nutrition and health, and clinical nutrition.



Reader's Guide Abstracts

Accesses popular periodicals published in the U.S. and Canada. Topics covered include current events and news, fine arts, fashion, education, business, sports, health and nutrition, consumer affairs, among many others.



Science Direct

Again, primarily a science database (mostly full text) but it does provide a lot of information on nutrition and dietetics.



Wiley Interscience

This database provides full text to over 300 journals in the areas of science, technology, mathematics, business and psychology, including nutrition and dietetics.

Electronic Journals

America Journal of Clinical Nutrition

The Journal's on-line presentation includes tables of contents and abstracts starting with the January 1996 issue in this peer-reviewed publication. The primary focus of the journal is the publication of basic and clinical studies about human nutrition.



Food Outlook

This electronic newsletter of the Food and Agriculture Association of the United Nations under the Global Information and Early Warning System on Food and Agriculture. It seeks to provide a concise analysis of information affecting the situation and outlook for basic foodstuffs, including cereals, meats, dairy products, and fertilizers.



FoodReview

FoodReview is an electronic version of the print journal by the same name. It is published by The Economic Research Service (ERS) of the United States Department of Agriculture is the economic and social science research agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This journal deals with "trends in [US] food consumption, food assistance, nutrition, food product development, food safety, and food product trade."



Journal of Nutrition

The American Society for Nutritional Sciences' (ASNS) online journal is available via subscription for  the full content of each issue, however, you can access all of the current and past issues' abstracts free of charge.  A worth mentioning feature is that from the abstract you can link to other related article citations in Medline.



Nutrition Action Healthletter

This electronic version of The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) newsletter focuses on educating the public adn policy makers about the critical importance of nutrition and food safety.  The newsletter offers full text of "highlights" from its current and previous issues, approximately 1 article per month.  The newsletter also features a section called "CSPI Classics," which feature articles on health related issues related to eating in Chinese, Italian, and Mexican restaurants, nutritional information about popcorn and grilling foods.

Food Resource

This webography is an attempt to link as much food-related information as possible. The purpose of this information base is to provide a large collection of jpeg images of foods, other food references, and links to related documents.



Index of Food and Nutrition Internet Resources

This webography is compiled by the Food and Nutrition Information Center of the United States Department of Agriculture. This is arranged in a searchable index or by subjects.



Virtual Nutrition Center - Martindale Health Science Guide

This very comprehensive site covers many, many areas including Food Science, Food Management, Cooking, Food Safety, Food Chemistry and more!  It also provides over 75,000 recipes and links to nutritional dictionaries and nutrition calculators.



Nutrition Pathfinder

This research guide, arranged by subject, is designed to help you thread your way through the weeds in the information jungle and locate the exact resources that will nourish your information needs. The site deals with Nutrition, including Clinical Nutrition, special diets/cookbooks, Food science, Eating habits/preferences, micro nutrients, additives, School Food Service, etc.

 

General Nutrition & Dietetics Sites

American Dietetics Association

The ADA's mission is to "serve the public through the promotion of optimal nutrition, health and well-being."  Their site offers fact sheets, healthy lifestyle tips, guides and reading lists, as well as conference information and press releases.



Calorie Control Council

This site provides all kinds of information on low-fat and calorie conscious lifestyles.  The site provides recipes and articles, but also nutritional and ingredient information on low-fat foods.



Center for Science in the Public Interest - Home Page

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is a nonprofit education and advocacy organization that focuses on improving the safety and nutritional quality of our food supply.... CSPI seeks to promote health through educating the public about nutrition and alcohol; it represents citizen's interests before legislative, regulatory, and judicial bodies; and it works to ensure that advances in science are used for the public's good.



Dietary Guidelines for Americans

Links to the 1990 and 1995 editions of Dietary Guidelines for Americans produced by the United States Department of Agriculture. There is also a report from the Advisory Committee that wrote the guidelines.



Dole 5 a Day: Nutrition Center

This site lists has nutrition labels from fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables' facts like vitamin A, C and fiber are also listed. This site is designed for the K - 6 grades but it's fun and it has lots of information.



FDA

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's website.  It has a separate sections on foods, as well as a special section at the bottom of that addresses issues specific to women, children. patients and consumers.  The site is also searchable and has an index.



Food and Nutrition Information Center (USDA)

This site is a MAJOR source of information.  It has the full texts of the Food and Nutrition Information Center's (FNIC) bibliographies, resource lists, and fact sheets covering the topics of nutrition education, human nutrition, food service management, and others. The site has databases available that include Food and Nutrition Software and Multimedia Programs, Foodborne Illness Educational Materials, Healthy School Meals and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) Training Programs and Resources. Government publications and data are also available, e.g. Dietary Guidelines for Americans, Healthy Eating Index, USDA's Food Composition data, Food Guide Pyramid publications and images, Third Report on Nutrition Monitoring and Food and Nutrition Research Briefs, plus many others.



Food Finder

To help you make fast food choices and be an informed consumer, the Minnesota Attorney General's Office has developed the guide Fast Food Facts, which the Food Finder is derived from. Included is an interactive guide to show the calorie, fat, sodium and cholesterol counts of menu items from popular fast food restaurants, based on the companies' own nutritional analyses. Check out the link to the book Fast Food Facts. It includes general data on fat percentages, calories, salt and cholesterol.



Food Safety Information Retrieval System

This database was designed by individuals with the Cooperative Extension Service at North Carolina State University to promote food safety education via the Internet. It is not intended to repeat information that is already available on the Internet, but to provide a "Gateway" to these food safety sites, while also including new information. The site is divided into 10 main categories including a Hot Topics section.



National Dairy Council

The official site of the NDC, it provides a "News Room," where you can find news bulletins as well as a bi-montly news alert; the "Nutrition Clinic," where you can read the Dairy Council Digest, as well as other research related items.  There is also the "Dairy Case," which provides all kind of information on specific dairy items and a nutrition quiz. 



National Organic Program

This group, a branch of the USDA, developed a consensus of production and certification standards for the organic industry.  The website provides news, press releases and other resources, including proposed acts, and existing programs.



Wayne State (MI) University, Department of Nutrition & Food Sciences

This site was included because it has links to career information in nutrition, food science and dietetics. There is also a links section which includes Food Industry links.
