By using COAST- The CSULB Library's online catalog!



COAST is the way you check for books and other items that the library owns.  Here are some helpful searches you can try in COAST to find topics related to FM & AD!

Using the KEYWORD search, type in:

In general, the call number areas that you will be using are the GT 500's and the TT's.  But for specific topics, it is much more effective to do a search in COAST.

ABI Inform Complete

This is a full text business database, but it provides a lot of clothing and apparel industry information.

Academic Search Complete

This general subject, partially full text database that contains some clothing and apparel information.

America: History and Life

This historical database database provides information on North America and Canada only.  Use this for finding historical fashion and clothing articles.

Art Index

While this is an art database, there is much included here regarding the art of fashion and costume.

Ethnic NewsWatch

This database provides newspaper and periodical articles written by and about various ethnic groups in the United States.  You will find things, but it is a last chance effort.

GenderWatch

This database is exactly how it sounds; it covers gender related topics and is great for FM and AP if your topic coincides with gender topics.

Historical Abstracts

Another historical database, but this one provides information on places other than North America.

Reader's Guide Abstracts and Reader's Guide Retrospective

This is a key database when searching for fashion, clothing and apparel information.  This database indexes all the major fashion publications, and anyone doing FM and AP research should check here.

Social Sciences Abstracts

This general social sciences database can help and provides some clothing and apparel information.

Sociological Abstracts

A social and behavioral sciences database, that provides some in-depth research on clothing and apparel topics.

How do I........find internet sites related to Fashion Merchandising & Apparel Design?

These internet sites have the "seal of approval" from the FCS librarian, and may be a useful starting point to do web research.

American Memory from the Library of Congress

Searchable visual files kept at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. This includes pictures, movies, playscripts, etc. Fashion is a term used and indexed.

Angel of Fashion

This directory of web sites related to fashion also includes a message board to post any questions free.

Bissonnette on Costume

From the Kent State University Museum, this searchable web dictionary on Fashion allows visitors to the site to search by geographical area, by time period or by topic and has full color photos of items with descriptions!  This site will be very helpful to students in FCS 251 if your country is covered by the geographical areas this site covers!

CJLutz Fashion WWWeb Page

This site claims to have the most complete index/directory of fashion on the web! It contains anything related to fashion. The site uses evaluation criteria and rates by using hearts.

Costume & Textiles at LACMA

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art presents 11 masterpieces form it's costume and textiles department on this website.

Costume Page

Presents an index of over 2000 online costume-related links for those students interested in fashion, textile arts and costume history. Includes information on the making, wearing, and history of costumes.

The Costume Site

Because historical fashion is used often used as costumes this is a great site to visit.

Costume Society of America

"The Costume Society of America advances the global understanding of all aspects of dress and appearance. We work to stimulate scholarship and encourage study in the rich and diverse field of costume."

Fashion Click:  The Online Fashion and Style Magazine

The online magazine covers fashions and collections as well as other issues related to fashion and style.

Fashion Net

This site has links to commercial vendors, shopping, and fashion shows sites. The site boasts a fashion  search engine!  It also contains information on job listings and a classified section.

Fashion Planet

This online magazine offers daily updates on articles related to the fashion industry.  It also features a section called "Windows on New York" which is a map of New York's fashion district.

The History of Costume

This site covers the 17th & 18th Century in Great Britain, France and Germany.

Institute of Draped Clothes (IDP)

This institute is dedicated to researching draped as it still exists all over the world.  Draped clothing examples are:  saris, Roman togas, sarongs, and other unstitched costumes found all over the world and History.

International Fashion Center

This site provides links to the official sites for many international designers, cosmetic brands, textile manufacturers and retail stores.

International Fiber Journal

This has abstracts from issues, you will need to subscribe to get the full information.

International Textile and Apparel Association

This is the official site for the ITAA, which is a professional educational association for textile, apparel and merchandising disciplines in higher education.

Internet Centre for Canadian Fashion and Design

This site distinguishes between fashion (clothing sales, fashion designers and shows) and design (fabrics and textiles). The Textile Dictionary is here, it defines various fabrics and fibers.  The site also has a fashion glossary and links to other fashion sources.

The Look Online

This site offers information on the fashion industry to both visitors and subscribers.

Pitti Immagine

This is an Italian electronic magazine or e-zine dedicated to the culture of fashion. To read it in English there is a bar along the left hand side.

Lucire

This online magazine first started in 1997 and they showcase designers regardless of their marketing budgets and their origins.  In addition, they have a policy to assist students who contact their magazine!

Lumiere

This photo magazine is currently under construction, however, you still have access to their pictorial articles of fashions, dating back to 1995.

Style.com

This is a HUGE site dedicated to fashion.  It gives the latest news on styles & trends, fashion shows, beauty, and people & parties.  They offer a "quick link" section where you can search by collection, party (!) and model.  This site is pubished by Condé Nast Publishing who publish Glamour, Vogue, Vanity Fair, W and others, and provide links to those online sites.  They also have a section on men's fashion.  This site is a must-see.

Vogue

This site allows you to view several online editions of the magazine, including the U.K., U.S. or Asian editions of Vogue.  In addition,  it contains a Daily News feature which is a daily news magazine for the Fashion World.
