Faculty News

Hiya and welcome to the Faculty News page! This page is designed to keep you, my wonderful and beloved faculty in the areas of FCS, Gerontology, Human Development, Recreation & Leisure, Kinesiology, and Social Work abreast of things that are happening in the library.

This will be a constantly evolving page. I am planning for monthly updates, but updates may happen more often if something important happens that I think you all should know about.

New and Exciting Things:

A new relationship has been forged! Academic Computing Services (ACS) has merged and become part of the Library Family. You can look forward to library collaboration with Beachboard, our online course management system! As this merger has just taken place during the summer, more details will follow, but we are all very excited about this!

For a long time, folks have wondered how to link back to an article or record in a database. The answer is Persistent Links, and we have a new webpage that discusses this in great detail, including how to use them, when to use them and where to find them!
/library/guide/persistent_links.html

The Library now has a contract for a campus-wide licence for Refworks! This is the only web-based citation software and the library will be conducting training sessions. In a nutshell, Refworks is a software that allows you to keep track, format and import your citations. I have been using it for an article I am working on and it is great!

Many of us have to use tests, measures and surveys in our research. For years, the best way to research a test or measure was to use the Mental Measurements Yearbooks and they have been a print source.....Until now! Mental Measurements is now online! Click here to use it!

When Google Scholar was first announced and publicized, it sent shockwaves throughout Libraryland. There has been much confusion about what Google Scholar offers and what it doesn't. This is a great article that discusses what Google Scholar does, how it gets its content and why it is NOT a substitute for using library resources!

Important Pages to Know about:

The Faculty Services page provides all the basic information about services the library provides to faculty, such as faculty book borrowing policies, periodical borrowing policies, research assistance, and much, much more.

Reserve Services
Whether you wish to put items on traditional or electronic reserve, this page has all the information you need.

The Lecture Request Form allows you to request one of my fabulous library lectures. This form will ask you all the information I will need to schedule the lecture and it will be sent directly to me!

Our Interlibrary Services page highlights the interlibrary services that we offer and provides the link to login to ILLiad at the Beach, which is our new Interlibrary Loan service!

The Electronic Resources page is your one stop shopping for library research and is the main page that I use when teaching. From here, you can get to COAST, our Electronic Databases and the Research Guides!

The Library Remodel is geared up and ready to go again! This page is where you can go for up-to-the-minute news about our very exciting Library Remodel!

Databases for Faculty:

Dissertation Abstracts
This database is invaluable in tracking down other folks dissertations and theses. Want to know if anyone else has done a dissertation on a given subject? This is the place to look!

Web of Science
This database is the place to go when you need to see how many times someone has cited your work. Our subscription covers all three citation indexes and can be very valuable. This is not a database I recommend using for general searching, but looking up cited works it is the only place to go.

WorldCat
Have you ever had a book title that eluded you? You couldn't remember a particular author's name correctly? This is the source that I use when I help you to find this stuff! This database is also great for looking up books on specific topics. This is where I go when I need to find out specific titles, authors, what libraries carry specific books and much, much more.
