Find Books.

Here is a sampling of subject headings which may be used to search COAST for books or government documents.

Some recommended books, paper versions are in italics and online books are normal font:

Allin, C. W. (2000). Encyclopedia of environmental issues. Pasadena, CA: Salem Press. Three volume encyclopedia.

Crump, A. (1993). Dictionary of Environment and Development: People, Places, Ideas an Organizations. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press.

Felton, J. (2002). Global Connections: America's role in the 21st century. Washington D.C: CQ Press. An encyclopedia that provides reliable unbiased information about the world and the U.S. role in it. Examples of entries include: Agency for International Development; Deforestation; Global Environment Facility; NAFTA; Ozone depletion; or water resources, etc.

Mongillo, J.F. (2000). Encyclopedia of environmental science. Phoenix, AZ: Oryx Press. An encyclopedia of the scientific issues in the environment.

O'Connor, D.E. (2006). Encyclopedia of the global economy : a guide for students and researchers Westport, CT: Greenwood Press. An encyclopedia on countries and their economy, it contains a chapter on the environment and sustainable development.

Pendergast, S. & Pendergast, T. (2002) Worldmark Encyclopedia of National Economies. Detroit, MI: Gale Group. Arranged by country with information on overall economy, taxation, country infrastructure, industry, economic sectors, international trade, proverty and wealth and a list of sources.

Welsh, B.W. & Butorin, P. (1990). Dictionary of Development: Third world economy, environment, society. New York, NY: Garland Publishing, Inc. Defines terms with a small bibliography of sources.

World Development Report. New York: Oxford University Press. An annual publication on how countries are developing and progressing.

World Resources: a report by the World Resources Institute and International Institutes for Environment and Development. New York: Basic Books. Published annually by the World Resources Institute who monitors world usage of environmental resources.

Find Articles.

Start with Databases by Topic: Environment / Ecology, some specifically recommend places to locate articles in environmental issues are:

Academic Search Elite. Using the terms "environmental economics and (international or world)" gets great articles.

EconLit. Using any of the COAST terms above or environmental economics gets plenty of articles. TIP: Use the classification codes to narrow down to more specific subject search, consider "Q" or "F" categories.

International Political Science Abstracts. Using terms like developing countries will lead to scholarly articles and book reviews.

Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management. Using terms like environmental economics will find you articles in both scholarly and popular journals, web sites and conference proceedings.

Wiley Interscience. Using environmental economics leads to full-text articles. You can limit by types of journals either Business, Finance & Management or Earth Science--each has different emphasis.

ScienceDirect. Using environmental economics leads to full-text articles. You can limit by types of journals: Business, Management & Accounting; Economics, Ecometrics & Finance; Energy & Power; Environmental Science; or Social Science--each has different emphasis.

Agricola. Using the "article citation database" look for article on environmental subject, there is very little with economics here.

Some electronic journals available on the web:

E Online. Called the E/The Environmental Magazine has a current issues plus archives. There are links to associations, educational institutions and government organizations.

IISD Linkages Update. A newsletter by the International Institute for Sustainable Development.

Electronic Green Journal. A peer-reviewed electronic journal started in 1994 and covers international environmental topics.

Find Web sources.

Search Engines or Research Guides to find good web sources: 

EnvironmentalResearchWeb by the Institute of Physics Publishing provides open-access journals, research resources, and sustainable futures to name a few. NOTE: free registration is required before users can comment and access much of the information.

Environmental Policy Studies: Information Resources from Columbia University's Lehman Social Sciences Library. TIP: Mainly U.S. oriented.

Environmental Science Research Guide by the University of Virginia Science Libraries. Comprehensive.

IPL Pathfinder: Sustainable Development. Includes web sources, newsgroups and print sources dealing with sustainable development.

Sustainability WebRing. Search engine that only searches web sites on this topic.

WWW Virtual Library on Sustainable Development. Comprehensive links to sites dealing with sustainable development, including organizations, projects and activities, electronic journals, libraries, references and documents, databases, directories and meta databases.

Yahoo: Environmental Nature. Good directory type search engine, includes topics on environmental economics. They also have a small directory to Environmental Economics.

Agency, NGOs or Organizations web sites that are recommended:

Committee for the National Institute for the Environment. This is a national non-profit organization which includes the National Library for the Environment. Click on Environmental News and use the searchable feature to find news on environmental issues.

Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN)The CIESIN web site is searchable on topics like the environment, text of environmental treaties and agreements, and links to other sites worldwide.

Global Exchange-Global Economy. Links to other sources that discuss ways to democratize world economies to make them friendlier to human rights. 

International Institute for Sustainable DevelopmentCanadian organizations web site providing information on sustainable development, climate and atmosphere, international NGOs, etc.

North American Commission for Environmental CooperationThis commission provides publications and resources on laws, treaties, NGOs and governments dealing on North America environmental issues.

Resources for the Future. A think tank dealing with the economics of environmental and natural resources issues. The web site has a library link that contains reports, briefs, book references, etc.

Tufts University, Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. A collection of texts for multilateral agreements dealing with environmental issues.

United Nations Environmental Programme. A major NGO dealing with the world. This program deals only with environmental issues.

World Resources Institute. Think tank dealing with global environmental topics.

Find Hot Issues in Environmental Economy.

Countries Economic and Environmental Issues. These two services discuss by country the issues of environment and/or economics. Each include briefings and articles about the country and how it is dealing with these issues. Economist's Country Briefings by Economist and EIU. Then CSULB subscribes to CountryWatch and CountryWatch with Macroeconomic Forecast by CountryWatch.

Environmental History Timeline by Green Crusades is an environmental conflict in history is a timeline of environmental events.

EPA Enforcement and Compliance History Online by the United States Environmental Protection Agency allows you to search by United States zip code or city/state to find out about EPA inspections and violations.

International environmental law contains documents that are often settled in the international courts.
