Downloadable / Time Series Data

California

Below is a short list of web resources for business statistics.  It's often very difficult to search for statistics sources, so if you don't find what you need here, please look at the book Business Statistics on the Web by Paula Bernstein. It is very thorough and lists so much more than could be included here.

General

  • Conference Board's Business Cycle Indicators
    The Conference Board produces many major economic series and the web site includes the data as well as information on methodology, summary of changes, latest releases, data release dates, etc.  Note: The full Business Cycle Indicators database is not searchable for free but Conference Board does "give away" current stats.
  • Consumer Price Index (CPI) Calculator
    This calculator at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis allows you to compute how much dollar prices for goods and services have changed = inflation.  Data can be calculated from year 1913 through the current year.
  • The Dismal Scientist
    Provides access to over 100 economic reports from over 15 countries.
  • EconData
    A database of links to regional socioeconomic data on the Internet.  Has a "Ten Best Sites section" to direct you to websites proven reliable for up-to-the-minute information.
  • EPI DataZone
    The Economic Policy Institute's web site has simple "snapshot" data (recent figures on labor market, family income, GDP, wages, trade, etc.) and "deep data" for a variety of things, including CPI from 1963, median family income from 1947, employment statistics, etc.
  • FedStats
    Search engine for US federal statistics from over 100 agencies.  Variety of ways to search.  A nice starting place.
  • Economic and Financial Data for the United States
    A compilation of all major statistics with updates at least twice a day. Covers real sector (national accounts), fiscal sector (general government), financial sector (banking) and external sector (balance of payments).
  • Finfacts Worldwide Cost of Living Survey 2005/2006
    Compares prices of more than 200 items in 144 cities across the globe.
  • FRED- (Federal Reserve Economic Data)
    A data rich site including monthly interest rate data, some historic data, t-bill rates, gdp, cpi, ppi, exchange rate data.
  • GEOSTAT
    Searchable County and City Data Books (1988 and 1994 ed), Regional Economic Information System (1969-1998), County Business Patterns (1977-1998), and many other files of government supplied data.
  • How Much Is That?
    Have you ever wondered what the value of a dollar was in 1895? Or what the GDP was in 1929? Here is a place where you can ask questions of comparative value covering purchasing power, exchange rates, and other variables between the past and today.
  • OFFSTATS: Official Statistics on the Web
    From the University of Auckland University Library; social, economic and general data from official sources, both current and time series, by country or topic, very international.
  • Rice Virtual Lab in Statistics
    An online statistics textbook and stat lab from Rice University.  Very comprehensive.
  • Social Science Database Archive (SSDBA)
    ICPSR maintains and provides access to a vast archive of social science data for research and instruction. Available to the CSU campuses.
  • Statistical Abstract of the United States
    Statistics on social and economic conditions in the US; current edition in addition to an archive of past editions; PDF format.
  • Statistical Data Locators
    From Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; international, strong in Asia and Oceania.
  • Statistical Resources on the Web
    Comprehensive annotated guide; categories include business and industry, cost of living, foreign economics, U.S. government resources on the web from University Of Michigan Documents Center.
  • STAT-USA
    Definitive source for US business, trade and economic data; provided by the Department of Commerce. Remote access available only to CSULB Students, Staff & Faculty. Use your Library Password for remote access.
  • United Nations InfoNation
    Interactive searchable database of international statistical information.
  • UNSTATS
    This site from the United Nations provides data from more than 30 specialized international data sources. Remote access available only to CSULB Students, Staff & Faculty. Use your Library Password for remote access.
  • U.S. Census International Data Base
    Searchable database of international demographic and socio-economic statistical information.
  • U. S. National Debt Clock
    Shows the national debt, posted along with Census figures and links to related sites on debt.

Downloadable/Time Series Data

  • B&E DataLinks
    American Statistical Association (ASA) offers B&E DataLinks, a searchable index of statistical data. Each link is annotated, with the date last modified, and is rated by the ASA. Very user friendly interface to datasets.  NOTE:  Some of the data to which B&E points will be fee-based time series...some of which will be available to CSULB for free.
  • EconData
    Economic time series from Inforum, University of Maryland, U.S., state/local and international.  Charts size of file, latest date updated and description.
  • Economic Policy Institutes Datazone
    State, regional and national time series are downloadable into Excel.
  • EconoMagix: The Economic Time Series Pages
    1000,000 sets of time series; browse by region or source; charts the latest update, current figures, and whether Excel file format available.
  • Global Financial Data
    This impressive collection of historical global financial data stretches from the years 1264 to 2000. While most of the actual data must be purchased, it does offer several free series, including Stock Markets since 1693, Interest Rates since 1700, and Inflation Rates since 1264.
  • NBER Online Economic Data
    Macro data, industry and individual data from NBER and other sources with links to other data sites.
  • Penn World Tables
    National Accounts Economic Time Series from the Center for International Comparisons at the University of Pennsylvania.
  • Social Science Data on the Net
    Comprehensive guide to sources of numeric social science data from Social Science Data Collection, University of California, San Diego; search or browse over 400 sites that have downloadable data, also data archives and catalogs.
  • World Economic Outlook (WEO) Database
    Comma delimited data files to download; from International Monetary Fund; aggregates at times back to the 1970's; good introductory information with definitions, explanations and instructions.

    Bimonthly summary from the California Department of Finance covering economic trends and data; data in Excel format from January 2000 to date.
  • California Statistical Abstract
    From the California Department of Finance, covers 17 categories including area, populations, labor force and employment, cost of living, health, manufacturing, banking, and public finance; in Excel format.
  • Counting California
    Interactive access to government data about California.
  • RAND California
    Provides data from more than 100 databases; covers California and US public policy with heavy emphasis on statistics; data is often provided at national, state, county, city and zip code levels. Remote access available only to CSULB Students, Staff & Faculty. Use your Library Password for remote access.
  • State and County QuickFacts: California
    From the U.S. Census Bureau; state profile covers population, demographics, housing, income, poverty, economic census, and county business patterns.
