SIC / NAICS (Industrial Classification Codes)
Standard Industry Classification and North American Industry Classification System
Printed copies of the SIC and NAICS manuals are at the CSULB Library Reference Desk, but the codes are retrievable on the web as well.
What is an SIC CODE and what do we do with it?
This page, prepared by Gary Klein, Management & Economics Librarian at Willamette University, very succinctly answers the question in the title.
North American Industry Classification System (NAICS)
NAICS has replaced the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC)...though you will continue to see SIC referenced in many places and publications. NAICS was developed jointly by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to provide new comparability in statistics about business activity across North America.
Ask Dr. NAICS (Census Bureau resource which answers questions about NAICS).
Comparisons between SIC & NAICS (Note: at the bottom of the list is a link for downloading the codes)
Standard Industrial Classification Search
Allows you to search the 1987 SIC Manual by keyword or to enter the 4 digit SIC and get the descriptive information on the SIC.
Georgetown University Library's NAICS Clearinghouse
Georgetown University Reference Librarian Jennifer Boettcher provides this "unofficial" clearinghouse of North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) information for economists, regulators, marketers, publishers, and "anyone else who uses industry based data." Boettcher provides links to official US, Canadian, and Mexican government Internet resources in addition to a NAICS and Standard Industry Code (SIC) bibliography with selected articles in full-text.
