Web Sites of Interest

California Healthcare Information
Healthcare information and data are available to the public from Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) in order to promote informed decision-making in today's health care marketplace, to assess the effectiveness of California's health care systems, and to support statewide health policy development and evaluation. A variety of information resources (financial, facility listings, utilizations data, discharge data) are available for: Hospitals, Licensed primary care and specialty clinics, Long-term care facilities, and Home health agencies and Hospices.

Centers For Disease Control and Prevention
The CDC is an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services. Their web site provides a great deal of U.S. statistical data including: death investigations, hazardous substances/health effects, sexually transmitted diseases, health information for travelers, and health information by categories of disease.

HCUPnet (HealthCare Cost and Utilization Project)
Can track national data on "hospital utilization, access, charges, quality and outcomes." Data in the customized reports are derived from the latest Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS).

National Center for Health Statistics
NCHS is the Federal Government's principal vital and health statistics agency and is a part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Scroll down and select "data warehouse" (on the left side of the screen) where you can download many different kinds of health statistics.

World Health Organization (WHO)
Data from the annual World Health Report are included on the site. It will be best to start with their search (upper right) to see if the statistics in which you are interested are available electronically.

Yahoo/Diseases and Conditions

Yahoo/Health
I am a big fan of YAHOO as a way of finding stable web sites by subject areas.

Other sites (as supplied by CDC)
This list of other sites provides alternative sources of health-related information.
