Search Engines/Portals

  • Colossus
    Links to more than 200 search engines throughout the world; listing is alphabetical by country name; links may be to English language sites or to native language sites; all linked search engines index information related to or from the country.
  • Country Profiles
    A links guide to country level information covering agriculture, government, aid, environment, gender, trade, microcredit, poverty, health, economy and food security; or go directly to the data sources used.
  • Portals to the World
    "Contains selective links providing authoritative, in-depth information about nations and other areas of the world; arranged by country or area with the links for each sorted into a wide range of broad categories.When completed, the project will include all the nations of the world." General

  • Background Notes of Countries and World Organizations
    From the U.S. Department of State; brief summary of the  situation (people, history, government, economics, foreign and US relations). Most reports are current within a year or two. Good basic information and data on each country.
  • Country Briefings
    Reports for 60 countries with "forecasts, economic and political profiles, core statistics, essential recent articles and in-depth surveys from The Economist." Includes currency converter, current stock market index numbers, forecast, political forces and structure and economic structure and data (four years).
  • Country Commercial Guides
    Done annually by U.S. embassies overseas for U.S. business community; 1996-2001 at U.S. Department of State site; Remote access available to CSULB students, faculty and staff only.
  • Country Data Section
    From the World Bank Group; through either Country Data Profiles or Country at a Glance statistics on over 100 developing economies.
  • Country Profiles
    From Mergent Online, reports on 100 countries including history, geography, people, government, economy, stock exchange information and filing practices.  Click on Search Database and then Country Profiles. Remote access available only to CSULB Students, Staff & Faculty. Use your Library Password for remote access.
  • Country Resources: The Green Boxes
    Nearly 200 countries with lists of print sources at the University of Indiana, Bloomington Libraries and links to electronic resources; provides the flag and map; covers general information sources, population, constitution, culture, economy, education, government, human rights and politics.  Includes countries not often covered such as Vanuatu and the Vatican.
  • Country Studies
    From the U.S. Library of Congress; this series of books (previously known as Area Handbooks) cover 101 countries and regions; each book is 200-400 pages long and covers history, society, economy and government and politics.  Each country book is searchable. Many are also available in paper format in the CSULB Library, D840 A3, in alphabetical order or check COAST under either "country study" or "area handbook" and the name of the company.
  • CountryWatch
    In-depth reviews of 191 countries, including geographical, political, economic, corporate, and environmental information. Updated with wire service news. Remote access available only to CSULB Students, Staff and Faculty. Use your Library Password for remote access.
  • Doing Business In...

    From Dun & Bradstreet covers top 40 trading countries of the US.
  • InfoNation
    View and compare the most up-to-date statistical data for member states of the United Nations.
  • Investor's Information Gateway
    From the Overseas Private Investment Corporation; pulls together in one place a variety of information on a county or region for those who might wish to invest (as long as the country does business with the OPIC); includes such diverse information as business holidays, investment leads, newspapers, travelers information and reports such as the CIA World Factbook and the State Department Country Commercial Guides among other information.
  • National Data Sources and Links
    From the United Nations Statistical Division; links to national and international data; by country provides links to national publications, statistical yearbooks, current statistics and Internet sites.
  • NationMaster.com
    Provides statistical data on countries from a variety of sources.  Can use it to interactively general charts or maps that rank countries in a vareity of topic areas. Sources for all facts and figures are cited.
  • World Factbook
    From the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency; basic information on geography, people, government, economy, communications, transportation and the military.
