Self-Check Expedites Library Borrowing

The library announces a new service that makes checking out library books faster and more convenient. Three Self-Check stations, located throughout the library, offer the option of “unmediated” borrowing: students can check out their own books. Here’s how it works:

Bring books to the self-check station
Following directions on the screen, the borrower swipes his/her campus id card through the card reader
Identify the CSULB Library barcode on each book to be checked out; scan it as shown on the screen, slide the book through the charging tray
When all books have been scanned in this manner, finish checking out by touching the “print receipt” button on the screen
A printed receipt will be issued, listing all books borrowed and the date(s) they are due; take the receipt and you’re on your way

Self-check stations are located on first floor, next to the south stairwell, on second floor at the entrance to the book stacks, and on third floor just inside the entrance to the study area. “We think that self-check has a lot of advantages,” said Vicky Munda, Coordinator of Access Services for the Library. “Students can locate books, check them out immediately on the floor where they’re studying, and avoid lines at the Circulation Desk. They also get a receipt showing what they’ve checked out, and that receipt can double as a bookmark.”
