Librarian interns will be assigned one or more CSULB librarians as mentors, based upon their subject interest/expertise as well as upon the needs of the library. They will be scheduled to work alongside their mentors at the library reference desk and will participate in the library’s web-based 24/7 reference service. They will receive orientation to the library’s collection development processes and will collaborate with CSULB mentors in materials selection. They also will have the opportunity to observe one or more bibliographic lectures and subsequently to “team teach” a future session with their mentor. If schedule permits they will be invited to attend a Library Faculty meeting and meetings of one or more of the sub-committees of that body: the Information Access & Instruction Committee and the librarian Collection Development & Management Committee.
CSULB Library mentors will be prepared to discuss each intern’s progress with the individual(s) themselves and will expect to have regular meetings/discussions with the intern’s library school site coordinator/supervisor. The objective is to provide each intern with real life experience in a variety of professional activities and functions in a busy and progressive academic library.
