Research & Writing Workshops are designed to help you at any phase of your paper writing process. Workshop topics include advanced Google searching, finding scholarly research articles and web sites, getting started with paper writing and how to cite your sources. In addition, special workshops for faculty, graduate level thesis students and transfer students will be offered. Please check back frequently for dates, times and locations of workshop sessions. At this time, workshops are reserved for current CSULB students, graduate students and faculty.
Low Stress Research Papers
This is a joint workshop being offered by the Learning Assistance Center. Librarians and Learning skills specialists will provide tips and resources for writing a research paper. You will leave this session with an overview of the organization, writing and research process required for a successful college level paper. Graduate Thesis Workshop: General Overview
Thesis Office personnel will provide a general overview of the thesis process at CSULB. The workshop will cover important deadlines, formatting and submission requirements for your thesis. Librarians will give an overview of library resources available to support thesis development, including an introduction to RefWorks to develop reference lists and inserting quotes. This service is available for CSULB graduate students only.
Graduate Thesis Workshop: Formatting APA Style
Thesis Office personnel will present information regarding use of APA style for the formatting of a thesis. This service is available for CSULB graduate students only.
Graduate Thesis Workshop: Formatting MLA Style
Thesis Office personnel will present information regarding use of MLA style for the formatting of a thesis. This service is available for CSULB graduate students only.
Graduate Thesis Workshop: Formatting CHICAGO/Turabian Style
Thesis Office personnel will present information regarding use of Chicago/Turabian style for the formatting of a thesis. This service is available for CSULB graduate students only.
Research for Ethnic Studies
Research 101 for Transfer Students
This session will go over the basics of library research for your classes and help you transition from a community college to a large university . Designed for transfer students, you will learn how to navigate the library website, use the online databases, and valuable tips for conducting upper division research in your area of study .
Research Paper Clinics
Both librarians and tutors from the Writer's Resource Lab (WRL) will be on hand to help you. Research assistance includes: Determining your research topic, finding books, journal articles, websites etc.,using databases, and determining the credibility of your sources. Writing assistance includes: Brainstorming your topic, developing a structure, identifying grammar problems you may have, and developing your writing process. These clinics will also help you with specific style manuals such as APA or MLA,and citation generators such as Refworks and Quickbib. Sessions will be held in the Spidell Classroom.
Refworks for the Sciences
RefWorks I: Introduction to Refworks
This is an introductory session open to all CSULB faculty, undergraduate and graduate students. Learn how to access RefWorks , export records from databases, organize references, and use Write-N-Cite to create quick bibliographies according to various citation styles (e.g. MLA or APA).
Refworks II: Advanced Refworks
This session is designed for individuals that are familiar with Refworks and understand basic functions such as exporting and importing files. This session will cover more advanced features available in Refworks such as sharing folders, developing online reading lists and inserting footnotes and page numbers in citations.
