Connecting to available databases from Off-Campus!
Step 1. Are you eligible?
You must be a junior or senior secondary school student enrolled in Advanced Placement or Gifted and Talented classes whose name has been sent to the CSULB Library by your high school librarian. Students who meet this criteria, as well as all currently employed LBUSD faculty and librarians, are eligible for a University Library card and remote access to selected Library databases.
Step 2. Make sure you have a CSULB Library Card
You must have a CSULB Library Card in order to complete the rest of the instructions. You can get your card at the CSULB Library Circulation Desk.
Step 3. Make sure you have access to the World Wide Web
You must have Internet service and a web browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer.
Step 4. Make sure you have a CSULB Library PIN.
Your Library PIN (Personal Identification Number) is a number of your choosing. You can establish your PIN on any computer which can access COAST via the WWW. You must have your CSULB Library card to make your Library PIN.
No one in the Library has access to your PIN, so make it something you can easily remember!
Step 5. Review "Connecting from off campus requirements" at
http://www.csulb.edu/library/access.html
Step 6. Go to the listing of available electronic resources at:
http://www.csulb.edu/library/instruction/hsdatabases.html
Step 7. Pick the database you are interested in using, and if prompted, enter your name, ID number, and library PIN.
Your ID number is your social security number. Submit your information by clicking on the gray button. Note: Not all databases require you to provide this information.
Having Trouble? If you have problems connecting to databases, fill out the Technical Support Form.
While the CSULB Library makes every effort to accommodate the different
remote access capabilities of our users, we cannot always guarantee seamless access
for those who are using leading edge technologies.
Step 8. Start your research!

REMOTE ACCESS: Frequently Asked Questions & Concerns |
1. Is my Library PIN the same as my high school ID number?
No. Your library PIN number is a number you establish through COAST, the library catalog (you can, however, use any number you want). For instructions on how to establish your library PIN number, see
Step # 4 above.
2. I forgot my Library PIN! What do I do?
Go to the Library Circulation Desk, and they will assist you in setting a new PIN.
3. When creating my Library PIN, the computer tells me "Sorry, cannot locate patron record."
You must have a CSULB Library card to create your Library PIN. If you do not have your card, you must come to the Library Circulation Desk to get one.

You can test whether or not your browser can handle these options by testing it at the following web page:
