19th Century Masterfile

Scope

CSULB subscribes to Series I of the 19th Century Masterfile.

Series I accesses over 1 million journal citations published from 1786-1922 and includes the contents of four 19th Century periodical indexes: Poole's Index to Periodical Literature , 1802-1906; Index to Periodicals , 1890-1902; Index to Legal Periodical Literature , 1786-1922; and An Alphabetical Subject Index and Index Encyclopedia to Periodical Articles on Religion , 1890-1899.

Coverage 1786-1922. Additional (historic) indexes added annually.

Searching

After opening the database, click on BEGIN SEARCH in the lower left of the opening page.

Search Options

Keyword Search- Searches any words found in a citation, title, author, subject. It searches both singular and plural forms of the word. It is important to be flexible with search terms. Bear in mind the slang of the day . Entries are not standardized and can vary by index being searched and style of the day. Here are some examples of variant search strategies: Enter each one separately.

A search for "Abraham Lincoln"

"president Lincoln" or "pres Lincoln"  or "Abraham Lincoln"  or "Mr. Lincoln"

A search for "African-Americans"

"slavery"  or "slaves" or "negro" or "colored" or "blacks" or "slave trade" or "slave ships"

(also need to consider using controversial and derogatory terms used at that time for ethnic groups)

Author Search- Can search for specific authors. For example, find the early works written by Charles Darwin

"Charles Darwin"  or "C. Darwin"

Title Search- Use this search option to find words limited to title line.

Viewing Results by Date of Publication

Search Results are automatically shown in "relevancy order: by the number of times the search terms came up in each citation. But if you want to see the oldest first:

Click on SORT. In pop up boxes, click on YEAR OF PUBLICATION and ASCENDING. Your results will come up oldest first.

Printing, E-mailing, and Saving Records

Results are very brief citations. You do not view much additional information by clicking on title link. You can select citations you want to print out, download or e-mail by marking the SELECT RECORDS box. Then click on SAVE CHECKED ITEMS. To view only saved items, click on VIEW CHECKED ITEMS.

Use browser functions to print, e-mail, download to file.
