Newspapers (Proquest Newspapers)

ProQuest NewsPapers contains the full text of 300+ U.S. and international news sources. Includes coverage of 150+ major U.S. and international newspapers such as The New York Times and the Times of London, plus hundreds of other news sources and news wires.  For some titles coverage goes back as far as 1986.

Searching

Click on Continue to get to the basic search screen.  You can search by word--basic or advanced.

For a basic word search, simply type in a word or words in the search box.  If you use a phrase of more than two words, enclose the phrase in quotation marks.  Select a date group from the "Date range" box.  You can search articles from 1998 to present or from 1986 to 1997.  Search in Citations and abstracts or in Full text of articles by selecting from the "Search in" box.

Advanced word searches can be used for simple or complex searches.  You can enter a word or phrase in one, two, or all of the blank search boxes.   As with the basic word search, if you use a phrase of more than two words, enclose the phrase in quotation marks.  You can select a particular field for searching by choosing from the drop-down box at the right side of the screen, the default of which is set at Basic Fields.  On the left side of the screen there are drop-down menus for the operators AND, OR, AND NOT, WITHIN 3 from which you can select.  You can specify an article type such as editorial or movie review, or search with the default of All for all types of articles.  Since you are searching an index to newspapers, you don't need to select a publication type.  You can select a very specific date range with this mode of search.

Help screens are available for both modes of searching and could be useful for refreshing your knowledge of searching or for beginning to search.

At the top of the screen, between the blue New Search box and the Orange ProQuest box there are two boxes labeled  "by word" and "for publication."  If you click on the "for publication" box you will get a screen that allows you to obtain a list of all titles in this database (click on the blue List publications), or you can search the name of a particular newspaper and see the articles in that newspaper for any specified date (subject to limitations of the database coverage, of course).

Search Results

Using either of the searches above, you will obtain a list of articles pertaining to the words or phrases you searched.  Click on the blue hyperlinked title of the article; you  will see an abstract of the article, and in most cases the full text of the article is also included.

Printing, Saving or Emailing Results
