Naxos Music Library

Naxos Music Library is a music listening service consisting of the entire recordings catalogues of the Naxos label and others. It includes classical music, jazz, world music and more. Naxos streams at near-CD quality (64KB).

Access requirements

PC: Microsoft Windows 98 or higher, Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher, Netscape 7.1 or higher.
MAC: Apple OS 8.6 or higher, Internet Explorer 5.2 or higher, Netscape 7.1, Safari 1.0, Mozilla 1.7 or higher.

For both PC and MAC, Windows Media Player 9 or higher is required. Naxos Music Library does not work with any other media player (i.e., RealAudio, etc.)

Note: You MAY NOT copy from Naxos Music Library. There is no capability to download or burn to a CD.

Musiquette

As soon as you log into Naxos Music Library, the database "reserves a space" for you. Your space is not released until you log out, close your browser or are timed out after 60 minutes. You do not even have to be listening to a track to keep someone else from listening. Please pay attention to this Naxos Log Out in the upper right corner and log out when you are finished.

Searching for Music

Standard Search

Choosing either Genre, Labels, or Categories in the left hand pane of the screen will bring you to an alphabetical listing of everything included in that choice. Use the alphabet at the top of the screen or the Next Page button to navigate. When you find what you are looking for, simply click on the album title to launch the CD.

Advanced Search

The following fields are available in Advanced Search:

  • Genre and Music Categories
  • Composer/Arranger/Lyricist
  • Catalogue No./Disc Title/Composition Title
  • Artists (Soloist/Conductor)
  • Performing Group (Choir/Ensemble/Orchestra)
  • Instrument
  • Period (i.e., Baroque, Romantic, etc.)
  • Country
  • Year Composed
  • Moods and Scenarios

You may enter information in either one or more of these fields. When you enter information in more than one field, Naxos automatically assumes the Boolean "and." For example, Mozart in the Composer field and Clarinet in the Instrument field will result in a list of Mozart's works for clarinet. Further instructions for these fields are given in the top part of the screen.

Use the Image of magnifying button key to browse the entries for that field. This is useful when you are unsure about how to spell a name or country, etc.

Listening to Music

Simply click on the title to launch a CD. It will open in a new window showing the CD cover art and a track listing. You may either Select All to play the CD from the beginning or select individual tracks by clicking the individual boxes. Then click Play Selections to begin. You can navigate within a piece by using the features of the player; stop, pause, back, forward, etc. Volume can be adjusted here as well. While you are listening you can click About this Recording to read the liner notes.

If you are accessing Naxos Music Library from home and have a dial-up Internet connection, click on the FM button under "Select Sound Quality" before choosing the music you wish to play.

Note: If you are accessing Naxos Music Library in the University Library, you must bring your own headphones.

Playlists

To access a playlist, simply click Playlist at the top of the screen. You will see a list of available Playlists on the left side of the screen. Click on your choice and a list of the music included in that Playlist will be displayed.
