How do I search for a journal article?
1.) Enter your search terms or keywords.  Use "All Fields" from the pull down menu for the largest search.
Use
AND, OR to build better searches
Type in your keywords such as bpsk or binary phase shift key in All Fields and click Run Search.

Note: Choose key terms and do not use sentences or questions.  Make sure words are spelled correctly.
If you know the title, use "Title" from the pull down menu.
If you know the author, use "Author" from the pull down menu. Type the author name (last name, first initial) and click Run Search.

2.) Limit your search results using tools on the right side of the screen labeled publications, select date range, display format, and organize results.
For Example, change the "Sort by" pull down menu to sort results by relevance, year, or article title. Hint: Sort results by year so the newer records are listed first.
Use the "Sort by" pull down menu under "Organize Results" to order your results by relevance, year or document title.

Note: Change the publication type with the "Select publications" menu. Select IEEE Journals, IEE Journals, IEEE Conference Proceedings, IEE Conference Proceedings, and/or IEEE Standards.

How do I search for a conference proceeding or standard?
Check the "conference proceedings" or "standards" checkboxes under "Publications" for publication type.  Enter your search terms in the boxes. Click Search.
Use
Illiad: Interlibrary Services to request any items we do not have in full text.  Please request any standards we do not have online access to through the Science and Engineering Librarian.

What is the truncation symbol?
The truncation symbol is the asterisk(*).  For Example, irradiat* finds irradiate, irradiation, irradiated, irradiating.
Note: Terms are automatically truncated in the Basic Search.

How do I get the full text of the article if available in the database?
Click the Full Text:PDF link underneath the citation information. You must have
Adobe Acrobat to get the full text of an article, if available.  If we do not have access to a document, the screen will say "Request not part of your subscription."

How do I get the article if not in the database electronically?

1.) Copy the citation [Article Title, Author Name, Journal Title, Volume Number, Issue Number, Year Published, Pages ] you need.

2.) Search for the Journal Title (not the Article title) using COAST, Journals.  If it is available electronically, click on the link and double check the years.  If it is available in print, click on the link that says "CSU Long Beach Local Holdings."  Match the year in your citation, write down the call number and location and go find your article.

3.) If CSULB does not have the journal you need, please fill out an Illiad: Interlibrary Services Form. Note: It takes 7-10 days to get an article through Interlibrary loan.

How do I print my results?
To print your list of citations, click on the "printer friendly" icon in the upper right corner.  Use the browsers' Print function under the File menu.  If you have gotten to the full text, use the Adobe print icon or use Adobe's Print function under File (using your browser's Print may not work with Adobe documents)

How do I email/save my results?
Use the checkboxes to mark the articles you want.  Click on "View Selected Items" at the bottom of your results.  Click on the Email icon in the upper right to email results.  To download into a citation manager program (such as Endnote,Procite,Reference Manager) or ASCII text for plain text use the "Download Citations" on the left side of the screen and click "Download."

How do I log off or exit?
Due to limited simultaneous use, it is good practice to log out on the top navigation bar when you are finished using IEEE Xplore.  Accounts will close after 20 minutes of non-use.

How do I see a list of journals we have access to full text in IEEE Xplore?
We have full text access to the IEEE/IEE Electronic Library (IEL) Online: 1988-present.
