Scope

The Historic New York Times provides indexing and full text content to the Times from 1881 through 2001. Data will be added in subsequent years maintaining a "3 year wall" behind the present year. All sections and articles within the Times are fully viewable including, commentaries, letters to the editor, editorials, entertainment news, radio and television schedules, classified ads, advertisements, photographs, and comics. Articles are viewed in PDF format.

Technical Information

The Historical New York Times is available to authenticated CSULB faculty and staff off campus at this page: Electronic Reference. The database's producers recommend using Navigator 6.01 or higher or Explorer 5.01 or higher. Articles are downloaded in PDF, Adobe Acrobat format.

Searching the Database

Historical New York Times is listed under under the Databases by Topic tab. Select History and then Historical New York Times. Or under the Databases by Title tab, go to databases listed under "H".

The Advanced Search Screen appears as below.

 

It finds the words Lincoln or President in the TITLE (or Headline) of each New York Times article.

AND the words Slave* or Negro* or Colored in the TITLE. The *asterisk truncates a word, it finds Slave, Slaves, Slavery

The Date Range has been selected that coincides with Abraham Lincoln on the national scene.

The Document Type has been selected that finds ARTICLES. (Not ads or classifieds or other types of content)

 

The result will be newspaper articles on Abraham Lincoln's views on slavery or African-Americans while he was president-elect or president.

Here are some additional examples of how you can conduct a search.

1. How to find a headline or title of an article.

a. At the top of the Advanced Search Screen, in the long box, enter in topic zoot suit* (asterisk denotes truncation "suit or suits")

b. To the far right of the long box it reads "citation and abstract." Use toggle arrow to toggle select option Article Title.

c. Select dates or date ranges if desired. If no box selected, database will search all years since 1851. Click on SEARCH

2. To find the text anywhere in a news article.

a. In the longer box type in roosevelt and zoot and riot* (riot* will search for "riots or rioting")

Words next to each other are treated as phrases, such as zoot suit riots or japanese internment camps

To find words within the same sentence or paragraph, type in roosevelt w/5 california or smog w/15 los angeles

b. To the left of the search box use the toggle arrow to select Article Text

c. To view only articles, (not ads or or other types of news items) look at the bottom of the search screen to More Search Options. In the box that reads "any article type" click on toggle arrow to select Article.

d. Limit your search to the World War II years by selecting the Date Range option FROM. Put in years 1941-1945

3. Limit your results to one of 19 different article types. Some of the different article types are: Editorial Articles; Editorial Cartoon; Review; Marriage; Comic; Sports; Letters; Display Ads; Classified Ads; Obituaries; Births; Legal Notices; Stock Quotes;

a. Type in the long search box at the top of the search screen roosevelt and simmons and mattress

b. To the left of the long search box use the toggle arrow to select Article Type

b. At lower end of search screen, look for More Search Options. Use arrows to toggle to Display Ad

c. Limit your search to the years FROM 1925-1935

Viewing Results

Newspaper articles appear in PDF or "Adobe Acrobat" format. Search results appear as below.

a. Click on the article title or on Article image PDF to view article by itself, without other nearby stories.

b. Click on Page Map to see the entire page for that day. The article will be seen in context with other stories of the day.

Customizing the Look of Your Results, Printing and E-Mailing

Once the article opens, use the Adobe Acrobat navigation tools shown below to turn pages, manipulate, zoom, e-mail and print articles. In the graphic below, the box at the upper right box that reads Article Image PDF enables you to toggle back and forth between the specific article by itself or the entire newspaper page of the day.
