Current Index to Statistics

The Current Index to Statistics (CIS) is a bibliographic index to publications in statistics and related fields. References are drawn from 162 core journals (as of 2003) that are fully indexed, non-core journals from which articles are selected that have statistical content, proceedings and edited books, and other sources.

The CIS Database indexes:

  • the entire contents of "core journals", in most cases from 1975 (or first issue if later) to the current end year, and pre-1975 coverage for several of them,
  • selected articles since 1975 from about 1200 additional journals (cumulatively), and
  • about 11,000 books in statistics published since 1975.
  • 182,000 articles in journals and 42,000 articles in books are referenced in the CIS Database as of August 2004.

The Current Index to Statistics is a joint venture of the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.

Searching:

This query interface allows combination of up to 4 conditions using logical AND, OR, or NOT (meaning "and not") operators, together with the year and other limitations and options specified separately at the bottom of the form. There are also several special types of queries that make use of only the first text box; for these, the operators and other boxes are ignored.  The graphic below shows the query interface with the 4 conditions using logical operators. For a complete explanation of other more advanced search options, it is important to review the CIS help page at http://www.statindex.org/CIS/CIS/query/helppage

Limitations may be placed on the four conditions using limitors on the bottom of the search form.  The graphic below illustrates those limitors.  You may limit by a range of years or limit to a particular document type (journals, books, proceedings, or e-journals).  You may also specify at this point your result format options (HTML, Bib Text, Tagged Text, Refer), the order of results, the maximum number of results retrieved, and the number of results (or headlines) displayed per page.  The defaults for result format options in CIS is format=HTML, more recent entries listed first, a maximum of 200 entries per result, and 20 results (or headlines) per page.

Wildcards:

"Wildcards" can be used in most search fields. Two wildcard characters are recognized. The "%" sign (percent) matches any sequence of 0 or more characters. The "_" (underscore) matches any single character. Some examples of author searches:

  • "Sm_th" matches "Smith", "Smyth", "Smoth"
  • "Sm%th" matches "Smith", "Smyth", "Smoth" and also "Smyllyth", "Smth"
  • "Jon%, A%T" matches "Jones, A. T.", "Jones, Alex Thomas", "Jonathan, Arthur T."

Exact matching:

Most search fields assume by default that there is a wildcard match at the end (for names) or both beginning and end (for titles/keywords, journal names). This allows partial matches, e.g. "Smith," matches the last name Smith with any given names. The wildcard can be suppressed by using the "@" character at the appropriate end of the string (only implemented for author name matching). Thus, for example, "Smith, George" as an author name would match "Smith, George" and "Smith, George J.", but "Smith, George@" only matches exactly.

Journals Indexed:

A full list of journals indexed in CIS can be found at http://www.statindex.org/CIS/CIS/ReleaseInfo/SerialsList.pdf

Output:

CIS offers no options for printing or emailing results.  You may use the result output options on the bottom of the search form to alter how the results display, but you must use your browser's print, save, or email functions to manage the results.

Exiting:

There is no exit function in the CIS database.

Usage restrictions:

Bibliographies of more than 250 records based on this database may only be distributed with permission of CIS.
