The Chicago Defender is an African American newspaper important for historical research on civil rights, segregation, African American migration to the industrial states, anti-lynching legislation, the modern civil rights movement and radical sentiments of the late 1960s. The Defender also published the works of African American authors, including Gwendolyn Brooks and Langston Hughes.

You can search all three of our Historical Newspaper Databases; the Historical New York Times, 1851-2002, the Historical Los Angeles Times, 1881-1985 and the Historical Chicago Defender 1905-1975, at the same time. Once you have opened one of these three titles, click on SELECT MULTIPLE DATABASES link in the middle of the opening search screen. Scroll the subsequent box down to the bottom and pick any combination of the historical newspapers. Note, historical databases cannot be searched in combination with non-historical databases
