Black Studies Center

The Black Studies Center consists of three major components. All three can be searched simultaneously.

1) Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience examines interdisciplinary topics on the African experience throughout the Americas via in-depth scholarly essays accompanied by detailed timelines along with important research articles, images, film clips and more.

2) The International Index to Black Periodicals contains current and retrospective, international and multidisciplinary bibliographic citations and abstracts from scholarly journals and newsletters from the U.S., Africa and the Caribbean, and full-text coverage of core Black Studies periodicals. Coverage from 1900 to date.

3) The Chicago Defender, 1905-1975 is an African American newspaper important for historical research on civil rights, segregation, African American migration to the industrial states, anti-lynching legislation, the modern civil rights movement and radical sentiments of the late 1960s.  The Defender also published the works of African American authors, including Gwendolyn Brooks and Langston Hughes.
