What is the Scope and Coverage of the ASCE Civil Engineering Database?
The ASCE is a free database from the American Society of Civil Engineers. It contains over 100,000 references to journal articles and conference proceedings. We have access to some electronic full text journals through the Scitation database.
What years are covered?
1970-present
How do I search for a Journal Article?
1.) Choose the type of document you are interested in or use"All Document Types" for largest search.
Enter your keywords or search terms in the "All Fields" box. Use AND, OR to build your search, if needed.

2.) If you know the author you are interested in, enter the author's name (use last name, first name) in the author field. If you are unsure of the author's first name use the author's last name, first initial and an asterisk (*).

4.) If you want to search for an article within a specific journal or for more information use the Search Tips.
What is the Truncation symbol?
The truncation symbol is the asterisk (*). For example, structur* will search for structure, structures, structuring, and structural.
How do I get the full text of a Journal Article?
1.) Click on the article title you are interested in. (Note: The database only gives 100 results per results screen)

. Scroll to find the article title and click on PDF. Use the Print function under File in the Adobe toolbar or click on the printer icon.
3.) Read about Scitation's features for emailing and saving results. Free registration is required to use these features.

How do I print?
Use the browser's print function to print the list of results. To print the full text of the article see How do I get the full text of a Journal Article.
How do I email or save?
Use the features of Scitation to email or save specific articles. Free registration is required to use these features.
How do I get the article or conference proceeding if not available electronically in the database?
1.) Copy the citation [Article Title, Author Name, Journal Title, Volume Number, Issue Number, Year Published, Pages ] you need.
2.) Search for the Journal Title (not the Article title) using COAST, Journals to see if we have the journal in paper or electronically in a different database.
3.) Try the Citation Linker.
4.) If CSULB does not have the journal article you need, please fill out an Interlibrary Services Form.
Note: It takes 5-10 days to get an article through Interlibrary loan.

What if I am asked to buy an article or conference proceeding?
This means we do not have access to the electronic full text of the article. Use How do I get the article or conference proceeding if not available electronically in the database? to find it in the CSULB library or to obtain through Interlibrary Loan Services.
