Ethnic NewsWatch

Scope
Ethnic NewsWatch is a full-text database of selected newspapers and magazines of the ethnic, minority and native press in the United Sates. This database is primarily popular literature although a few journals are indexed. This comprehensive interdisciplinary database provided alternative perspectives to the mainstream print media on almost any topic. Periodicals from Native, Euro/Eastern European, African, Asian, Arab, Hispanic/Latino and Jewish American communities across the United States are included.The database is an excellent source of Spanish language information for Southern California as it indexes La Opinion, the largest Spanish language newspaper in this region.

Coverage
Coverage is from 1960 to the present. Over 200 magazines and newspapers from around the United States are included. The database is updated monthly.

Searching Tips

  • ADVANCED SEARCH is the default search screen. Search termsmust be entered in the search dialog boxes.The default search will cover "Citation and Article Text."
  • The search fields can be limited by using the pull down menu under Citation and Article Text. Numerous options are provided. They are also listed individually at the bottom of the search screen.
  • The Thesaurus button located the Tool at the top of the search screen allows for targeted subject searchs using the controlled vocabularly of the database.
  • The Ethnic Group field limit is very effective for focused research.
  • Other field limits include Publication Name or Date, Author, Type of Article or Language of Article (English, Spanish, English/Spanish). Other limiting options are available. The database is searchable in Spanish and English with titles in both languages indexed.
    • Multiple Proquest databases may be searched at once by using the Select Multiple Database link under Database.Date coverage buttons are provided right below theDatabasesearch dialog box. You can search Ethnic NewsWatch's entire database at once or you can limit by time period.
    • HELP information is available from all search fields by clicking on About or Search Tips at the top of the screen.
    • The Scholarly Journalsfield isusefull but limited as the majority of titles in Ethnic NewWatch are popular (magazines and newspapers) sources.
    • Searches are automatically sorted by Relevancy rather than Date.

Saving the results
  • E-Mail

1. Check box(es) on the left of the citation to mark page(s) for printing or downloading or open the selected document.

2. Click on the E-Mail button at the top of the page.

3. Enter your e-mail address in the "to" line and click Send EMail.

1. Check box(es) on the left of the citation to mark page(s) for printing or downloading or open the selected document.

2. Click on Print. A dialog box will appear which prompts you to print from the Library's networked printing station.
