CSULB Library Expectations for User and Visitor Conduct

The CSULB University Library is committed to providing users with an environment that is well-maintained and conducive to study and research.

Members of the campus community and others can expect to be treated in a courteous and professional manner by library staff. In turn, users and visitors are expected to engage in behavior that does not interfere with these efforts and that does not result in the improper use of the library's facilities. Users and visitors also are expected to abide by all relevant University policies, state and federal laws, and those general principles that guide civil behavior and discourse in an academic environment.

To ensure that all library users and visitors are able to use the University Library's resources and services effectively, the library requires full compliance with the rules and regulations listed below. Entering the Library represents your agreement to abide by these rules.

  • Cell Phones
    • In order to maintain a quiet, respectful study environment, the Library asks that all cell phone users set their phones to vibrate while they are in the building.
    • Cell phones may be used with discretion in building lobbies (all floors) where normal conversation between two people would not be disruptive and distracting.
    • While in the Spidell Technology Center please be considerate of your follow students and relocate your cell phone calls to one of the areas listed above.
  • Roller blades, skates or skateboard use are not allowed in the Library.
  • Bicycles must be parked outside the Library.
  • Children under age 14 must be supervised at all times. University Police may be asked to assist in locating parents/guardians of unattended children.
  • Shirts and footwear must be worn at all times.
  • Drinks should be in covered containers (except where posted signs prohibit drinks).
  • Food is prohibited in all computer areas and Special Collections/Archives.
  • Users are expected to dispose of recyclables and other trash in an appropriate manner.  Recycling and trash containers can be found throughout the building.  Please report any spills to library staff for clean up.

Prohibited behaviors include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Theft, vandalism, or the deliberate misplacement of materials or resources.
  • Being in unauthorized areas of the Library, remaining in the Library after closing or when requested to leave during emergency situations or drills.
  • Tampering with emergency mechanisms (fire alarms, alarms in elevators, or opening emergency exits in non-emergency situations).
  • Bringing animals (including birds and reptiles) into the Library, unless they are certified assistance animals.

In addition, the following CSULB policies are in effect:

Compliance Measures

  • Proper identification may be requested by any library staff member and must be presented upon request.
  • All portable items, e.g. backpacks, bags, briefcases, may be subject to inspection by University security personnel and library staff.
  • Users or visitors whose conduct or activities violate the above expectations will be asked to modify their behavior or leave the library.
  • Failure to comply with these rules and regulations may result in the loss of library privileges in addition to other disciplinary measures by the University and possible legal consequences.
  • The library will pursue infractions or misconduct through campus disciplinary channels and/or law enforcement as appropriate.
  • Anyone aggrieved by a conduct decision may consult the University Library Administration and/or University Ombuds.
