Vital Records


Vital Records document a person's birth, death, marriage, or divorce. They also provide information on a medical license, criminal record, liens on finances or adoption.  Click below for information on Background Checks and what can be found out about you.

National Center for Health Statistics has a page on how to obtain birth, death, marriage, and divorce certificates from each state.  Arranged in an alphabetical directory by individual State and territory.  You must first determine the State or area where the event occurred and then select the first letter in the State name from the alphabet.

United States Vital Records Information links to the web sites that search for birth, death, marriage and divorce records. They also provide some tricks in looking for records.

Replacing your Vital Documents provides information on replacing documents to prove who we are.  

U.S. Public Record Information links all the categories of records. Note some are not free and fees could be charged. There is also links specific to California.  

Vital Statistics of California are by the State of California, this annual report contains statistical tabulations of births, deaths, and fetal deaths.  

Health and Vital Statistics from the University of Delaware is a guide to links that provide mortality, life tables and specific mortality of women information.

Naked in Cyberspace: how to find personal information online by Carole Lane is a book that helps one find various types of records on the Internet.  

Search Systems is a search engine for finding business information, corporate filings, property records, unclaimed property, professional licenses, offenders, inmates, criminal and civil court filings, and much more. You can narrow down to state level or another country. Note some are fee charging services.  

Vital Records via LexisNexis is a research guide to using sources they provide plus free ones on the internet to find these records.  

Public Access to Court Records by National Council for State Courts. This links to court information which is not necessarily vital records. There are record links but mainly this page relates the legalities involved with releasing records on people to the public.
