Acronym Finder
This site offers a searchable database containing over 198,000 acronyms/abbreviations and their meanings. The focus of the database is technology, telecommunications, and the military (perhaps because of the acronym-intensity of these fields), but many general topics are included as well.

This site provides links to Roget's Thesaurus, dictionaries, word games etc.

Lists major dictionaries, encyclopedias, thesauri, and glossaries available on the Internet. Includes everything from sign language, telecommunications, computers, weather, tides, water quality and a lot more." Some annotations.

This dictionary is published by Webster's and draws from several other printed and online sources.  It includes legal and medical terms as well as other common language definitions.

Online Dictionary for Library and Information Science (ODLIS).
As the name implies this dictionary covers everything you always wanted to know about Library Science, from abstracts to zoomorphic initial.

Rhyming Dictionary
More than just rhymes, this dictionary includes synonyms, antonyms and the definition.

Visual Merriam Webster Dictionary Online
Provides 6000 images and 20,000 terms with definitions.  Useful when you know what something looks like, but don't have the name or when you know the word, but not the way the thing looks.

ENCYCLOPEDIAS

britannica.com
Online version of The Encyclopaedia Britannica.   A number of encyclopedia articles include links to appropriate Web sites.  The University Library also provides its students, faculty and staff access to the full version of Encyclopaedia Britannica

Columbia Encyclopedia
This is the sixth edition of Columbia's encyclopedia with over 50,000 entries.  It also provides access to dictionary and thesauri. 

Encarta Encyclopedia
The Encarta Encyclopedia offers users access to thousands of entries on every subject from A to Z.  There are also links to a dictionary and atlas.

Encyclopedia Mythica
This is an encyclopedia on mythology, folklore and legends with over 6,000 related definitions.

 


LANGUAGES

Ethnologue : Languages of the World
Contains links between over 6,000 languages and the countries in which they are spoken. Users can look up languages by country, or consult an alphabetic list of languages to see how many people speak them in each country. Also available is the language family index, which groups languages by shared structural and lexical innovations.

Foreign Languages for Travelers
For numerous languages, get basic vocabulary terms, pronunciation guides, translating dictionaries, slang guides, etc.  Sound files are included to help with pronunciation.

This classic edition (1919) can be searched online.

Cook's Thesaurus
As the name implies, Cook's thesaurus leads the user to ingredients and kitchen tools.  Entries include pictures, descriptions, synonyms, pronunciations, and suggested substitutions.
