CSULB participates in the CSU-Microsoft Campus Agreement [opens new window], which only allows the installation of Microsoft Windows 7 on university owned computers. Campus technology staff can download Windows 7 from Software Depot for this purpose. Faculty, staff and students may purchase Windows 7 at the University Computer Store [opens new window] for personally owned computers used primarily for university business. Contact your division, department or college technologist for assistance.

System Requirements

The following system requirements are the minimum necessary to run Microsoft Windows 7.

  • Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
  • System Memory: 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
  • GPU: SVGA (800x600)
  • HDD: 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
  • Optical Drive CD-ROM drive
  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Product functionality and graphics may vary based on your system configuration. Some features may require advanced or additional hardware.

Installation and Activation

Volume Activation 2.0 is a new requirement in the Windows 7 operating system and Windows Server Code Name "Longhorn," which requires activation of each Windows 7 / Longhorn license acquired under a Volume License agreement. Future Microsoft products will also use this new licensing system. Volume Activation 2.0 is designed to help increase protection and to help better manage the Volume License keys in managed and non-managed environments as well as provide flexible deployment options. The process has varying levels of transparency for end users, and the Volume Activation 2.0 solution works in a variety of environments. Volume Activation 2.0 provides the campus with two types of keys and three methods of activation.

Campus-owned Computers

If software you download from Software Depot is in the ISO format and your CD-burning software does not support ISO images, OAT recommends downloading ISO Recorder [opens new window]. The ISO format can easily be duplicated for installation on your department's computers.

Microsoft Windows 7 is part of the CSULB Microsoft Campus Agreement Program. Activate the product using CSULB's volume license key ( serial number ) for this product during the installation process [opens new window] or during the migration [opens new window].

The license key is displayed as part of the product details in Software Depot. Log in to Software Depot and then click on the "My Software" link in the upper left hand corner of the page. Click on the link labeled "Secure Download" for the product and activation code.

Personally-owned Computers

The University's Volume Licensing Media and keys may NOT be used for Microsoft Windows 7 installations on personally owned computers used primarily for university business. For those installations, faculty and staff must purchase a media kit from the bookstore.
