Creating a Test with Questions Drawn at Random from a Pool

To create an assessment that draws a random subset of questions from a larger pool of questions, follow the instructions below. Note that all questions in a random block will have the same point value.

Once you have created or imported one or more question pools,

  1. Login to BeachBoard. https://beachboard.csulb.edu/
  2. Under My Courses, click the name of the course into which you would like to create a test.
  3. Click the course's Control Panel link.
  4. Under Assessment, click the Test Manager link.
  5. The Test Manager will open.
  6. Click the Add Test icon.
  7. In the Test Information page, enter the test's name [required], description, and instructions
  8. Click Submit.
  9. The Test Canvas page will open.
  10. From the Add Question, drop-down menu, select Random Block.
  11. Click the GO button. The Add/Modify Random Block page will open.
  12. Under the Search the pools and assessments below window (a random block of questions can be drawn only from a pool, not an assessment), select a pool by clicking its name. You can select multiple pools by holding down the Control button while clicking.
  13. Under the Search the pools below section (question types are linked below not pools), either click the checkbox for ALL questions or one or more specific question types.
  14. Enter the Number of questions to import and the Points per question.
  15. Click Import. Wait a moment for the Test Canvas to open. You'll note that only a single question appears to be added, of question type random block. If you need to make any changes to the block, click its Modify button. If you need to make changes to the questions or answers themselves, you'll need to modify the pool from which they're drawn, via the Pool Manager.
