What is the Round Stingray distribution?

They are found from Northern California (Eureka) to Panama, including the Gulf of California (i.e. Sea of Cortez).

What kind of habitat are they found in?

They are mainly found in shallow coastal regions. They are mainly associated with soft bottom (sandy) areas such as bays, estuaries and sloughs.

How deep are they found?

From 1-21 meters (1-70 feet). Juveniles tend to be found closer to shore than adults.

What do they eat?

The stingray is a benthic (bottom-dwelling) predator feeding on infaunal organisms (animals that live in the substratum, in this case, sand) such as polychaete worms, small crustaceans, snails and clams (specifically clam siphons). Digs in by flapping rostrum and pectoral fins.

What eats them?

Their only known predators are the Northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) and black sea bass (Stereolepis gigas).

How big do the get?

The largest one measured 56 cm total length (TL), although disc-width (DW) measurements are usually used in determining size. The DW-to-TL ratio is 1:1.75. The average size is from 8 to 25 cm DW.
