The Mandarin Chinese Summer Language Program will begin accepting applications for the fifth cohort in February 2011. The deadline to submit completed applications has been extended to March 26th, 2011. Students accepted to the fifth cohort will spend six weeks in Taipei at the Mandarin Training Center. Faculty from CSU and from National Taiwan Normal University will provide an enriching Mandarin only language learning environment.
Motivated students are encouraged to complete the online application form.
Students and faculty from cohort three will again be at Shanghai Foreign Language University for the summer. In addition to the six-week Summer Language Intensive they will visit historical Xi'an, the capital Beijing, and nearby Hangzhou and Suzhou.
For additional details please see the official Chinese program announcement, or the application information at the CSU Consortium for the Strategic Language Initiative (SLI) Program main web site.

The Intensive Immersion Language Program of the Southern Consortium of California State Universities offers a unique opportunity to jump-start your CV with professional language capacity currently much in demand.
California State University Long Beach will offer the Mandarin Chinese program for the fourth year. This extremely rigorous academic experience requires students to commit to six-weeks of intensive language study in summer 2011 in Taiwan, a similarly intensive study-abroad program in China in the summer of 2012, and to follow-up guided study courses during the intervening semesters. During the summer programs students should plan to dedicate themselves completely to the study of the target language; they must commit to speaking only Mandarin.
Two courses will be offered during the first phase in the summer of 2011: a 3 unit course CHIN 301 Advanced Chinese and a local advanced spoken Chinese course tailored to the needs of each individual student offered by NTNU. The second and third phases of study during fall 2011 and spring 2012 compose a non-credit maintenance program to keep up language proficiency. The fourth phase (second summer study abroad in 2012) will include one reading/writing course offered by a CSU instructor and one advanced spoken language course taught by a local instructor. One unit credit for CSULB CHIN 499 will be granted during this phase.
Since budget resources are limited, phase I summer study (2011) is guaranteed, while subsequent phases of study are pending upon the availability of funding.
