Tune-in to the Cultivating Excelencia Podcast: Featuring the AIMS2 program at CSU Northridge

The upcoming podcast will feature the CSU Northridge Attract, Inspire, Mentor, and Support Students (AIMS2 ) program led by Director and Lead Principal Investigator S.K. Ramesh. The AIMS2 program which seeks to improve the academic achievement of Hispanic and low-income students in engineering and computer science fields was recognized as the 2019 Example of Excelencia.

By way of background programs nominated for consideration by Excelencia are reviewed by a national panel of experts under the following criteria: Mission, Goals, Student Need, Culturally responsive practices, Sustainability, Leadership and Data. Programs selected for recognition have demonstrated evidence based practices to improve student success for Latinos and underrepresented minorities in our disciplines. 

 

Webinar: Creating Sense of Belonging for STEM students through US Department of Education-Funded Grants at Hispanic-Serving Institutions

Description: The webinar will provide an understanding of, and strategies for, using undergraduate research and peer and faculty mentoring activities to create a sense of belonging for STEM students at Hispanic-Serving Institutions. Representatives from HSI-STEM projects at California State University, Bakersfield and California State University, Stanislaus will present an overview of their project activities and various successes and challenges. The webinar will also showcase student retention and completion data to analyze the impact of the project activities on the students’ sense of belonging to their STEM major and campus community.

Webinar: Overcoming Challenges in Evaluation for Department of Education-Funded Grants at Hispanic Serving Institutions

Description: This webinar will explore the arc of evaluation throughout the life-cycle of a grant, the importance of rigorous evaluation design, and strategies to overcome various challenges. The unique perspectives of external and internal evaluation will be discussed as well as how either can be leveraged to address both federal requirements and unique campus needs. Various reporting methods will be reviewed, including federal, publication, and local campus reporting. The webinar is designed for Principal Investigators and Evaluators of Department of Education Title III and Title V-funded grants at Hispanic Serving Institutions.

Speakers: Rebecca M. Eddy, Ph.D., President Cobblestone Applied Research & Evaluation, Inc., & External Evaluator at Cal State University, San Bernardino: 

Rebecca M. Eddy is the founder and current president of Cobblestone Applied Research & Evaluation, Inc. (Cobblestone). She earned her Ph.D. in Applied Cognitive Psychology and has spent her career applying the principles of learning and cognition to research and evaluation of educational programs. As the primary evaluator on more than 80 external evaluation projects, she has 20 years of experience in teaching and conducting evaluation and applied research studies, including 14 Department of Education Title III and Title V-funded grants. She continues to train new evaluators through the Certificate of Advanced Study in Evaluation at Claremont Graduate University. Cobblestone serves clients throughout the U.S. with offices in southern California, Washington DC, and Seattle, Washington.

Steven Margell, M.S., Lead Evaluator of Title III HSI-STEM Activities, & Lecturer in Mathematics at Humboldt State University:

Steven Margell earned his M.S. in Mathematical Modeling and has held positions as both staff and faculty in higher education. He currently leads the evaluation efforts for a Department of Education Title III grant with an emphasis on cross-campus collaborations. Beyond standard reporting procedures, his efforts focus on rigorous evaluation of various grant-funded activities and student support services followed by dissemination of the results to inform policy on campus to support and institutionalize effective programming.
