Architecture master plan for Long Beach State

Architect Ed Killingsworth and his firm draw up a 1963 master plan of the campus -- calling for a unified look to make the campus more friendly for pedestrians. The architects suggest that instead of building a great big student union atop the college's hill, they build a three-level structure set into the hillside. The firm also design the two-story dorms to blend with the rest of the college and the residential neighborhood.

Tree planting planning

Ed Killingsworth and President Carl McIntsoh champion a plan for tree planting across the campus. Aethetically pleasing, the added trees are to help in softening the large monolithic buildings already present on campus.

The Flowering Tree Committee

Killingswroth, McIntosh and landscape architect Edward Lovell take the tree planting issue to the community, seeking to raise $15,000 to buy three thousand of Helen Borcher's peach trees with salmon-pink blossoms. Fundraising took years, and supporters were forced to hurriedly raise money after the peach trees were purchased. But they got their peach trees, as well as ficus and Eucalyptus trees that helped bring about the views still enjoyed on capus today.

The changing fashion scene

The fashion style for this year included Bermuda shorts, briefcases, beards and bicycles. Students like Rosemary Taylor Schmidt recall her and her classmates wearing dresses or skirts and blouses to class every day. Capris and pants are reserved for finals week.

Memoriam of President John F. Kennedy

The assassination of the late John F. Kennedy leads to a sorrowful mood across the campus. A memorial service takes place in the central quad where President McIntosh gives a moving address.
