HOW BETA PSI CAME TO BE
Just 5 short years after the campus now known as CSULB was founded, William S. Maddio and a group of friends undertook an ambitious project: to bring the first fraternity to this campus. Thus was born Beta Psi. Chartered on the 50th anniversary of Phi Kappa Tau, Beta Psi was a rock of the CSULB Fraternity system into the mid-1990's, when membership dropped, and the chapter had to be closed.
In Spring 1999, Kees Woudenberg began his search for a new fraternity. After looking through numerous information packets, he found Phi Kappa Tau. It was a perfect fit, and thus Phi Kappa Tau returned to campus in fall of 1999 under the guidance of Gabe Uebel and Jeff Hilperts, recruiting 13 other guys by the end of rush. These fourteen men were formally associated with Phi Kappa Tau on September 17th, 1999, and the colony was formally reinstalled at a small gathering the following day, and so Beta Psi was once again an official participant in the life of CSULB. A year and a half of hard work has brought us to where we are today. Through good and bad, the 25 men who are proud to call themselves Phi Kappa Tau have overcome many obstacles, earning Phi Kappa Tau's administrative excellence award, placing among the top in IFC academics, taking third place at Greek Sing, and earning the Interfraternity Conference Pride award.
