OFFERS A ONE YEAR FULL-TIME LECTURER POSITION IN URBAN GEOGRAPHY
(RENEWABLE FOR A SECOND YEAR DEPENDING ON PERFORMANCE REVIEW AND BUDGET)

SALARY DEPENDS ON TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE; RANGE IS BETWEEN
$35,292 AND $40,488 PER YEAR
The Department of Geography invites applications for a ONE YEAR FULL-TIME
LECTURER POSITION in Urban Geography beginning August 23, 2001, and
terminating May 31, 2002, but renewable for a second year depending on
performance review and budget. ABD in Geography or closely related field and
ability to communicate effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse
campus are required. Evidence of specialization in urban-economic geography
and demonstrated or potential ability for effective teaching of introductory
geography courses including World Regional Geography is also required.
Desired/preferred qualifications include ability to teach a regional geography
course; Ph.D. in hand; and experience or familiarity with a comprehensive
university. Duties will include:
- teach courses that address urban-economic geography (existing courses
include Principles of Urban Geography, Metropolitan Problems, Urban Life and
Problems, Land Use Planning);
- teach introductory geography classes including World Regional Geography;
- attend and participate in departmental meetings and affairs.
Normal teaching load is four courses per semester. Final determination of
teaching assignment is dependent on departmental needs and applicant's
qualifications.
The Geography Department at CSULB has 50-60 undergraduate majors, 40 active
M.A. students, active certificate programs in GIS/Cartography and Urban
Studies, and a strong undergraduate and graduate internship program. Since
Fall 1998, of all statewide freshman applicants to the California State
University system of twenty-three campuses, CSULB was identified as the first
choice campus by one third of applicants. CSULB, located in Long Beach,
California, is an ethnically diverse campus in a dynamic urban area within ten
minutes of the shore and a 1-2 hour drive from mountain and desert landscapes.
The Department's Five Year Curriculum Development Plan, approved in 1999 by a
supportive and progressive administration, reflects the Geography faculty's
strong student orientation and its interest in applied research. The
Department goal is to emphasize three avenues of teaching and applied research
that focus on Southern California: The concentrations include
urban-economic-demographic principles, issues and problems; environmental
principles, issues and problems with emphasis on water and ecosystem resources
and land use management and environmental conservation; and methods and
techniques with sequenced courses directed to map analysis and design, GPS,
spatial statistics, remote sensing and GIS. The Department possesses a 25
work stations computer/GIS laboratory and a Remote Sensing Center with state
of the art equipment and Internet connectivity. The department also supports
other campus programs with a variety of lower division introductory classes

To be considered, a candidate must provide all required documents including:
- letter of application which specifically addresses minimum and
desired/preferred qualifications and duties in position description,
- curriculum vitae,
- official transcript from institution awarding highest degree and, if ABD,
from doctoral institution,
- evidence of effective teaching experience or potential for same; student
evaluation summaries are required if they exist and peer evaluations and/or
teaching portfolios may supplement student evaluations; and
- three letters of recommendation (it is the candidate's responsibility to
have referees send letters of recommendation directly to the Geography
Department Chair.
The Geography Department Search Committee can not consider
an applicant prior to receiving all required documentation.
